【브레이크뉴스 울진】이우근 기자=울진군(군수 손병복)은 포항·경주·영덕과 함께 추진해온 ‘경북 동해안 유네스코 세계지질공원’(면적 2,693.69㎢)이 지난 4월 10일(현지시간) 프랑스 파리에서 열린 제221차 유네스코 집행이사회에서 공식 의결됐으며, 4월 17일 유네스코로부터 지질공원 지위 부여를 통보받았다고 14일 밝혔다.

이번 등재는 경상북도와 울진군을 비롯한 동해안 지자체들이 지질 유산 보존과 지역사회 연계를 위해 지속적으로 노력한 성과로, 국내에서는 2017년 청송에 이어 두 번째 유네스코 세계지질공원 지정 사례가 됐다.
유네스코 세계지질공원은 지질학적 가치뿐 아니라 생태·역사·문화 자원과의 연계성, 지역사회 협력, 지속 가능한 관리 체계 등을 종합적으로 평가해 선정되며, 국제사회에서 자연유산으로서의 가치를 공식적으로 인정받는 제도다.
‘경북 동해안 지질공원’은 ▲한반도 최대 규모의 신생대 화석산지 ▲동아시아 지체구조 형성 및 화성활동의 주요 흔적 ▲다채로운 지질경관과 아름다운 해안 절경 등을 갖추고 있으며, 성류굴을 비롯한 울진 지역의 지질 명소들이 세계적으로 중요한 학술적·교육적·관광적 가치를 지닌 것으로 평가받았다.
이번 지정은 2023년 6월 유네스코에 의향서를 제출한 이후, 2024년 ▲7월 그리스·인도네시아 평가단의 현장 실사 ▲9월 베트남 카오방에서 열린 세계지질공원 이사회 심의 통과를 거쳐 최종 결정되었으며, 2025년 9월 열리는 제11회 세계지질공원 총회에서 공식 인증 동판 수여식이 예정돼 있다.
울진군은 그간 경상북도와 협력해 ‘경북 동해안 지질공원사무국’을 중심으로 근남면의 ‘경북동해안지질공원센터’ 운영, 탐방 인프라 구축, 지질 교육 및 체험 프로그램 운영, 주민·기관 협업 등 유네스코 지정 기준 충족을 위한 기반 조성에 힘써왔다.
손병복 울진군수는 “이번 세계지질공원 등재는 울진의 지질 명소 성류굴을 비롯한 동해안의 자연유산을 세계에 알리는 계기이자, 주민과 함께 지속 가능한 지역사회를 만들어가는 발판”이라며 “앞으로 지질관광을 지역 복지와 경제 발전을 동시에 이끄는 모델로 육성해 나가겠다”고 말했다.

Uljin-gun Including ‘Gyeongbuk East Coast UNESCO Global Geopark’ Officially Registered… Expected to Activate Geotourism
Uljin-gun (Governor Son Byeong-bok) announced on the 14th that the ‘Gyeongbuk East Coast UNESCO Global Geopark’ (area 2,693.69㎢), which it has been promoting together with Pohang, Gyeongju, and Yeongdeok, was officially approved at the 221st UNESCO Executive Board held in Paris, France on April 10 (local time), and that UNESCO notified it of its geopark status on April 17.
This registration is the result of the continuous efforts of Gyeongsangbuk-do and Uljin-gun, as well as local governments along the East Coast, to preserve geological heritage and connect with local communities, and is the second UNESCO Global Geopark designation case in Korea following Cheongsong in 2017.
UNESCO Global Geoparks are selected by comprehensively evaluating not only geological value but also connectivity with ecological, historical, and cultural resources, cooperation with local communities, and sustainable management systems, and are a system that officially recognizes the value of natural heritage in the international community.
The ‘Gyeongbuk East Coast Geopark’ has ▲ the largest Cenozoic fossil site on the Korean Peninsula ▲ major traces of East Asian tectonic structures and volcanic activity ▲ diverse geological landscapes and beautiful coastal scenery, and geological sites in the Uljin area, including Seongryu Cave, were evaluated as having internationally important academic, educational, and tourism value.
This designation was finalized after submitting a letter of intent to UNESCO in June 2023, ▲ on-site inspections by the Greek and Indonesian evaluation teams in July 2024 ▲ passing the deliberation at the Global Geoparks Board of Directors held in Cao Bang, Vietnam in September, and an official certification plaque award ceremony is scheduled for the 11th World Geoparks General Assembly to be held in September 2025.
Uljin-gun has been working with Gyeongsangbuk-do to establish a foundation for meeting UNESCO designation criteria, such as operating the ‘Gyeongbuk East Coast Geopark Center’ in Geunnam-myeon, building exploration infrastructure, operating geological education and experience programs, and collaborating with residents and organizations, centered around the ‘Gyeongbuk East Coast Geopark Office’.
Uljin-gun Mayor Son Byeong-bok said, “This designation as a World Geopark is an opportunity to introduce Uljin’s geological attraction, Seongryu Cave, and the natural heritage of the East Coast to the world, and it is also a stepping stone to create a sustainable local community together with residents.” He added, “We will continue to foster geological tourism as a model that simultaneously leads regional welfare and economic development.”
