브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= 엔씨소프트가 미국의 독립 게임 개발 스튜디오 ‘엠티베슬(emptyvessel™)’에 전략적 지분 투자를 진행했다.
투자 주체는 엔씨소프트 북미법인인 엔씨웨스트다.
엠티베슬은 2023년 미국 텍사스주 오스틴에서 설립된 트리플 A급 독립 게임 개발 스튜디오다. 글로벌 유명 게임 개발사인 액티비전(Activision), 디즈니(Disney), 이드 소프트웨어(id Software), 마이크로소프트(Microsoft), 너티독(Naughty Dog) 출신의 베테랑 개발진들이 창립 멤버로 참여했다.
엠티베슬 개발진들은 둠(DOOM), 퀘이크(Quake), 콜오브듀티(Call of Duty), 라스트 오브 어스(The Last of Us), 보더랜드(Borderlands), 툼 레이더(Tomb Raider), 언차티드(Uncharted) 등 글로벌 흥행을 거둔 1인칭 슈팅(FPS)과 액션 어드벤처 게임 제작에 참여했다.
현재 엠티베슬은 사이버펑크 스쿼드 PvP(Player versus Player) 방식의 택티컬 슈팅 게임 ‘디펙트(DEFECT)’를 개발 중이다. 언리얼 엔진5 기반의 PC 플랫폼 타이틀로 2024년 첫번째 공식 트레일러 영상을 공개한 바 있다.
양사는 이번 투자를 시작으로 장기적인 파트너십을 맺고 신작 슈팅 게임 ‘디펙트(DEFECT)’의 퍼블리싱 권한을 포함한 다양한 협력 방안을 논의한다.

엔씨소프트 박병무 공동대표는 “엠티베슬은 글로벌 메이저 장르인 슈팅 게임에 대한 성공 경험과 전문성을 확보한 개발진, 팬덤을 보유한 게임 아트와 사운드 전문가들이 설립한 트리플 A급 개발 스튜디오”라며 “앞으로도 글로벌 신규 IP 확보와 장르별 클러스터 파이프 라인을 구축하기 위한 투자를 지속하겠다”고 말했다.
한편, 엔씨소프트는 신성장 동력 확보를 위해 개발력과 장르적 전문성을 갖춘 국내외 개발 스튜디오에 투자를 지속하며 협력을 확대하고 있다. 2024년 한 해 동안 북유럽 스웨덴의 ‘문 로버 게임즈’, 동유럽 폴란드의 ‘버추얼 알케미(Virtual Alchemy)’와 국내 ‘미스틸게임즈’, ‘빅게임스튜디오’에 투자 및 퍼블리싱 협력을 진행 중이다.
