도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 6일(현지시간) 현 러시아·우크라이나 간 전쟁 관련해 "러시아가 G8에 있었다면 지금 이 터무니없고 살인적 전쟁이 일어나지 않았을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
AP통신 보도에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 백악관에서 열린 2026 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 북미 월드컵 관련 태스크포스 회의에서 취재진 질의에 이같이 말한 후 "나는 그 결정이 매우 잘못됐다 생각하며 그 결정은 트뤼도(전 캐나다 총리)·오바마(전 대통령)가 주도했다"고 주장했다.
그러면서 러시아의 G8 재가입 여부 관련해선 "아니다. 좋은 타이밍이 아니라 본다"라고 했다. 11년 전 G8(주요 8개국)의 러시아 배제 결정을 비판한 동시에 현재 러시아의 G7 재가입은 적절하지 않다고 한 것이다.
트럼프 대통령의 이같은 언급은 러시아의 FIFA 월드컵 출전 금지 여부에 대한 취재진의 질의 과정에서 나왔다.
트럼프 대통령은 "나는 몰랐다. 사실인가?"라고 물었고, 참석한 잔니 인판티노 FIFA 회장은 "무슨 일이라도 일어나 평화가 찾아오고 그러면 (러시아를) 재가입시키길 바란다"고 했다.
이에 트럼프 대통령은 "그게 좋은 인센티브가 될 수 있을 것이며 그들이 (전쟁을) 멈추길 원한다"고 했다. 또 "오바마가 러시아를 좋아하지 않았고 그들(G7)은 러시아를 G8에서 제외했다"며 "나는 러시아를 제외한 게 매우 어리석은 결정이었다 생각한다"고 했다.
지난 2014년 3월 G7 정상들은 네덜란드 헤이그 핵안보정상회의를 계기로 모여 러시아의 크림반도 합병 등 우크라이나 침략에 대한 제재 차원으로 G8 등 주요 국제 회의체에서 제외하는 '헤이그 선언'을 발표한 바 있다.
트럼프 대통령은 이날 마크 카니 캐나다 총리와의 정상회담 관련해선 "회담은 정말 잘 진행됐고 어떤 긴장도 없었다"며 캐나다·멕시코와의 내년 월드컵 협력에 대해 "완전히 완벽하게 진행 중으로 오늘 회담에서도 이 문제를 논의했다"고 전했다.
또 카니 총리를 트뤼도 전 총리처럼 '미 주지사'라 칭하지 않은 한편 이유에 대해선 "아직 그렇게 하지 않았고 앞으로도 아마 하지 않을 수 있다"고 했다.
이어 행사 직후 집무실에서 열린 스티브 위트코프 중동 특사 취임 선서식에 참석한 자리에서 카니 총리와의 회담 당시 언급한 '며칠 내로 나올 크고 놀라운 발표'에 대해 "지각을 뒤흔드는 소식"이라며 "무역에 관한 게 아닌 다른 것에 관한 것"이라고 했다.
그러면서 "미국·미국인을 위해 정말 지각을 뒤흔들 긍정적 발전이 될 것이며 앞으로 며칠 내 이뤄질 것"이라고 말한 가운데 앞서 카니 총리와의 정상회담 자리에서 "오는 8, 9일 "매우 중요한 주제에 대해 매우 큰 발표를 하겠다"고 전했다.
더불어 위트코프 특사 취임선서식에서 카슈미르 총기 테러 사건 여파로 갈등을 빚던 인도·파키스탄 간 미사일 공방 관련해선 유감을 표한 후 "그들은 수십년 수세기 동안 싸워왔다'며 "이 일이 빨리 끝났으면 한다"고 했다.
한편 트럼프 대통령은 다음주 예정된 사우디아라비아·카타르·아랍에미리트(UAE) 등 취임 후 첫 순방길에 이스라엘은 포함되지 않을 것이라고 밝혔다.
