이주호 대통령 권한대행 부총리 겸 교육부 장관이 지난 문재인 정부 당시 '채널A 사건' 수사를 지휘하다 당시 윤석열 검찰총장과 대립했던 이정현 법무연수원 연구위원(검사장급) 징계안을 재가했다.
이 권한대행은 전날 법무부가 이 연구위원에게 내린 정직 1개월 징계 처분을 재가한 가운데 징계 처분 효력은 9일 발생한다.
앞서 지난 4월 22일 법무부는 징계위원회를 열어 이 연구위원에 대해 성실의무 위반 등을 이유로 정직 1개월 징계를 의결한 바 있는 가운데 징계 사유는 연구논문 제출 기한인 1년 이내 논문을 제출하지 않은데다 제출 기한 연장 승인도 받지 않았다는 것이다.
이 연구위원은 지난 문재인 정부에서 검사장으로 승진해 대검 공공수사부장을 지냈으나 윤석열 정부때 2022년 5월 법무연수원으로 발령받았다.
이 연구위원은 지난 2020년 서울중앙지검 1차장 재직 당시 국민의힘 한동훈 전 대표(당시 검사장)·이동재 전 채널A 기자에 대한 강요미수 혐의 사건 수사를 지휘한 바 있다.
검찰은 당시 이 전 기자를 구속기소했으나 이후 무죄가 확정됐고, 한 전 대표 경우 지난 2022년 4월 무혐의 처분을 받은 바 있다.
검사징계법상 징계 경우 견책·감봉·정직·면직·해임 등 5단계로 나눠지는 가운데 정직 이상은 중징계로 분류된다.
