지금 국민의힘이 하는 걸 보면 갈급한 나머지 바닷물을 마시는 격이다. 그 갈증은 ‘세대교체’다. 문제는 이번 대선이 아니다. 패배주의가 아니라 그들에게 이번 대선은 매우 어려울 것이다. 치명적인 실수를 저질렀기 때문이다. 그들은 지금까지 민주당을 ‘이재명 일극체제’라고 비난해왔다. 그 비난의 근거는 ‘비민주성’이다. 국민의힘에서 벌어진 ‘후보 바꿔치기’ 사태를 보라. 심각한 건, 그 ‘후보 바꿔치기’로 인해 계엄 사태에 대해 실낱처럼 남아있던 재평가의 여지가 사라져버렸다는 점이다. 반복된 걸 우연이라 말하기 어렵다.
강준만 교수의 지적이 옳다. 지금 보수 진영 내 ‘배신자’ 논쟁은 황당한 구석이 있다. 국민들이 국민의힘 비민주적 행태를 어떻게 볼지 생각해보라. 반전을 위해, 지난 경선에서 젊고 팬덤을 보유한 그리고 중도확장 면에서 가장 유리한 후보가 뽑혔어야 한다. 이미 다 끝난 얘기지만, 한동훈 전 대표의 모금 속도가 이재명보다 빨랐다. 보수 진영 내 그만한 팬덤이 또 있을까? 솔직히 모든 경기는 이기자고 하는 것이다. 선거도 마찬가지다. 패배를 전제하고 전략을 짜면 그건 ‘자기 열등화 전략’ 밖에 되지 않는다. ‘자기 열등화 전략’은 긴장감이 없다. 그래서 겁쟁이들이 선호하는 것이다.
국민의힘 후보 단일화도 사실상 실패했다. 홍준표는 미국으로 떠났고, 그 지지자들은 이재명 지지를 선언했다. 한동훈 전 대표도 한덕수 전 총리도 김문수 후보의 선대위에 참여하지 않고 있다. 김문수도 말을 바꿨다. 그는 분명 경선 중에 ‘후보 단일화’ 뜻을 내비쳤다. 하지만 막상 후보로 선출되자, 그의 권력욕이 되살아났다. 청렴하게 살아온 이들의 특징은 대개 자존심이 강하다. 돈 싫다는 사람이 있을까? 돈이 싫은 게 아니라 돈보다 더 좋은 게 있을 뿐이다. 바로 ‘관념’이다. 미안하지만, 김문수 후보는 관념 세계에 살고 있다. 김문수 후보를 허수아비 취급, 농구에서 인터셉트하듯 그의 후보직을 ‘가로채기’ 하려했던 이들은 한참 잘못 짚었다.
김문수 후보는 딜레마에 빠졌다. 그가 이번 대선에서 망신을 피하고, 선전하려면 한동훈 전 대표의 제안을 받아들일 필요가 있다. 어차피 물은 엎질러졌다. 국민의힘 ‘후보 바꿔치기’ 시도와 그 치명적 비민주성을 만회하려면 고육책을 내야 한다. 당과 보수 진영 전체에 걸쳐 전면적 쇄신에 착수해야 한다. ‘청렴’ 김문수 후보는 정치 세력에 마음의 빚도 없을 것이다. 모 아니면 도다. 환골탈태 밖에 없다.
한국은 체제 위기에 직면할 가능성이 있다. 게임이론 시각에서 풀면, 그 체제 위기는 기득권 보수주의자들의 나태함이 부른 결과다. ‘애국’을 외치는 그들의 속내는 상업주의다. 전쟁방지 메커니즘 구축엔 관심이 없고, 추상적인 ‘반공’ 이념만 파는 격이다. 메커니즘 구축은 ‘반복적 외침’이 아니라 ‘행동 계획’인 것이다. 보수 진영 내 기회주의적 부패 기득권을 완전히 청산할 때, 한국 보수는 회생 기회를 맞을 수 있다. 보수는 한국 체제의 오른쪽 날개다. 한국의 도약과 비상을 위해선 건강한 보수가 꼭 필요하다.
진보 진영은 표몰이에 도가 텄다. 반면 보수 진영은 ‘이념 팔이’ 중에 어설픈 표몰이 시도를 하는데, 바로 진보 진영이 씹다 버린 ‘껌’같은 포퓰리즘 정책을 주워 다시 씹는 격이다. 그 식상함으로 인해 지지 기반이 취약해지면, 온갖 무리수를 동원하게 되는데 그게 바로 지난 계엄과 ‘모두 잠든 후에’ 벌어진 ‘후보 바꿔치기’ 사태다.
기억할 게 있다. 한국 보수가 표 안 되는 짓만 골라 하는 건 그들이 어리석어서가 아니다. 반공 상업주의자들이 너무 교활해서다. 그 모든 게 유인체계가 잘못 구축된 결과다. 생각과 철학이 전혀 다른 채 같이 이윤을 탐닉하다 선거 국면에서 그 이해관계가 틀어진다. 진보 진영에 있고 보수 진영에 없는 게 있다. 바로 동지애와 의리다. 진보 진영은 젊은 시절 이상이었건 환상이었건 그걸 위해 뭔가를 즉, 실익을 포기해 본 사람들로 구성되어 있다. 누군가는 학교도 다니다 말았고, 감옥도 가봤고, 돌도 던져봤고, 돌도 맞아봤다.
하지만 보수 진영은 실익을 한 번도 포기해본 적 없는 사람들로 구성되어 있다. 물론 자본주의 사회에서 이윤 추구를 비난할 수 없다. 다만 양 진영 내 장착된 유인체계가 다름을 지적하는 것이다. 진보 진영은 이재명 후보 중심으로 뭉쳐 그 중력이 더 커지고, 보수 진영은 핵분열로 인해 중력이 더 약해진 이유다. 보수 진영은 여러 개로 쪼개지고, 작은 위성들이 되어 이재명 중심의 궤도를 돌게 될 것이다.
방법은 딱 하나다. 역설적이게도 한국 보수가 완전히 망해야 다시 태어날 수 있다. 그럴 리 없어 보이지만, 천신만고 끝에 김문수 후보가 승리한다고 치자, 김문수 후보는 탄핵 당하지 않는다고 장담할 수 있을까? 민주적 소양이 없는 이들, 갑() 질이 몸에 밴 이들 중심의 부패 기득권이 청산되어야 폭 넓은 지지를 기대할 수 있다.
정말 낮은 곳으로 임할 수 있는 윤리의식과 공적 마인드로 무장, 국민에게 양질의 정치 서비스를 제공할 수 있는 실사구시 정당으로 다시 태어나야 한다. 그 정당은 현금을 퍼주는 게 아니라 성실 근로자들과 납세자들을 먼저 챙기는 당이어야 한다. 그래야만 한국에 오른쪽 날개가 돋을 수 있다. 그게 한국의 제체 붕괴를 막을 수 있는 유일한 길이다. yslee1992@kunsan.ac.kr

It’s because they made a fatal mistake. They have been criticizing the Democratic Party as a ‘Lee Jae-myung one-man system.’ The basis for that criticism is ‘undemocratic.’ Look at the ‘candidate swap’ incident that occurred in the People’s Power Party. What’s serious is that the ‘candidate swap’ has eliminated the slight room for reevaluation of the martial law situation. It’s hard to say that it’s been repeated by chance.
Professor Kang Joon-man’s point is correct. The current ‘traitor’ debate within the conservative camp has some absurd aspects. Think about how the people will view the People’s Power Party’s undemocratic behavior. In order to turn things around, the candidate who is young, has a fandom, and is most advantageous in terms of moderate expansion should have been chosen in the last primary. It’s already a story that has ended, but former leader Han Dong-hoon’s fundraising speed was faster than Lee Jae-myung’s. Is there another conservative fandom with that kind of fandom? Their true intentions while shouting ‘patriotism’ are commercialism. They are not interested in building a war prevention mechanism, and they only sell abstract ‘anti-communist’ ideology. Building a mechanism is not a ‘repeated cry’ but an ‘action plan’. When the opportunistic corrupt vested interests within the conservative camp are completely eliminated, Korean conservatives will have a chance to recover. Conservatism is the right wing of the Korean system. Healthy conservatism is essential for Korea’s leap forward and emergency.
The progressive camp is good at attracting votes. On the other hand, the conservative camp is making a half-baked attempt at attracting votes while ‘selling ideology’, which is like picking up the ‘chewed gum’ of the progressive camp and chewing it again. When the support base becomes weak due to this boredom, they resort to all sorts of unreasonable measures, which is exactly what happened during martial law and the ‘candidate swap’ incident ‘after everyone fell asleep’.
Remember this. The reason Korean conservatives only do things that don’t get votes is not because they are stupid. It is because the anti-communist commercialists are too cunning. All of this is the result of a flawed incentive system. They pursue profit together with completely different ideas and philosophies, and their interests diverge during the election. There is something that the progressive camp has and the conservative camp does not: camaraderie and loyalty. The progressive camp is made up of people who have given up something, that is, practical benefits, for something that was an ideal or fantasy in their youth. Some have dropped out of school, been to prison, thrown rocks, and been hit by rocks.
However, the conservative camp is made up of people who have never given up practical benefits. Of course, you cannot criticize the pursuit of profit in a capitalist society. It is just pointing out that the incentive systems installed in the two camps are different. The progressive camp is united around candidate Lee Jae-myung, which makes its gravity stronger, and the conservative camp is weakened by nuclear fission. The conservative camp will split into several parts and become small satellites that will orbit around Lee Jae-myung.
There is only one way. Ironically, Korean conservatism must completely collapse in order to be reborn. Armed with the ethical awareness and public mindset that can truly step down, they must be reborn as a pragmatic party that can provide quality political services to the people. That party must be a party that takes care of honest workers and taxpayers first, not handing out cash. Only then can Korea have a right wing.
