이주호 대통령 권한대행 부총리 겸 교육부 장관이 19일 미국와의 관세 협상 관련해 "대미 협의가 차질 없이 이뤄져야 한다"며 "7월 패키지 도출을 목표로 국익 최우선·상호 호혜 원칙 하에 차분하고 진지하게 미국과 협상에 임해야 한다"고 밝혔다.
이 권한 대행은 이날 오전 서울 종로구 정부서울청사에서 열린 경제안보전략간담회를 개최해 "대미 협의가 차질 없이 이뤄질 수 있도록 산업부·관계부처가 긴밀히 공조해야 한다"며 이같이 당부했다.
이 자리에선 지난 16일 APEC(아시아태평양경제협력체) 통상장관 회의를 계기로 열린 한·미 장관급 협의 결과 공유와 함께 20~22일까지 사흘간 예정된 미국과의 제2차 기술협의 대응 방향에 대한 논의가 이뤄졌다.
앞서 지난 16일 한·미 통상 정책 수장 안 장관과 제이미슨 그리어 미국 무역대표부(USTR) 대표는 제주 서귀포시에서 열린 APEC 통상장관회의에서 양자 회담을 진행했다.
이는 지난달 24일(현지시간) 미국 워싱턴 D.C에서 열린 '한·미 2+2 장관급 통상 협의' 후 20여 일 만에 다시 이뤄진 가운데 안 장관은 미국 측에 국별 관세·품목 관세 일체에 대한 면제를 재차 요청한 바 있다.
한·미 양국은 오는 20일부터 미국서 진행되는 2차 기술협의에서 균형 무역·비관세 조치·경제 안보·디지털 교역·원산지·상업적 고려 등 6개 분야 중심으로 추가 협상을 이어가기로 했다.
정부는 미국의 상호관세 유예기간인 오는 7월 8일까지 한국에 부과된 25% 상호관세와 철강·자동차 등 품목별 관세 철폐를 끌어내기 위해 최대한 합의안을 도출한다는 계획인 가운데 조선·에너지·첨단산업 등 미국과의 산업 협력·환율 문제 등은 관세 협상과 별개로 진행할 방침이다.
또 미국 상호관세 조치 유예기간이 끝나는 오는 7월 초까지 최대한 협상을 이끌어내 차기 정부 협상을 위한 초석을 다지겠다는 계획이다.
