이주호 대통령 권한대행 부총리 겸 교육부 장관이 27일 "우주항공은 오늘날 과학기술을 넘어 국가 경쟁력을 좌우하는 최첨단 핵심 산업·경제며 미래 세대를 위한 중요한 투자"라고 밝혔다.
이 권한대행은 이날 오전 경남 사천 우주항공청에서 열린 '제1회 우주항공의 날' 기념식에 참석해 "정부는 우주항공청을 중심으로 대한민국 우주항공 미래를 위한 도전을 아낌없이 지원하겠다"며 이같이 밝혔다.
그러면서 "기존 산업으로 꿈꿀 수 없던 부가가치·자원을 통해 우주 잠재력을 실현해 꿈꾸어 왔던 달·화성·심우주로 대한민국 우주경제를 무한히 확장해야 한다고 생각한다"며 "산학연관 협력 생태계를 강화해 뉴스페이스 시대를 실현해 나가겠다"고 밝혔다.
또 "지속적 우주항공 분야 발전을 위해 대학·연구·공공기관·산업 현장이 유기적 연계·협력하는 인재양성·연구개발(R&D) 혁신·민간 중심 산업생태계 기반 조성을 강화해 나가겠다"며 "우주항공 단지 조성을 통해 산업을 적극 육성하고 재사용 발사체·초고해상도 위성 등 핵심 선도기술을 개발해 새로운 우주항공 글로벌 표준을 선도해 나가겠다"고 했다.
이어 "우주항공 분야 인재 양성은 단순 기술 축적을 넘어 우리나라 기술 주권·미래 경쟁력을 좌우하는 핵심 과제"라며 "정부는 대학이 이런 전략적 분야에서 중추적 역할을 수행할 수 있도록 아낌없이 뒷받침할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
더불어 "우주항공 분야 국제협력은 우리 비전을 실현하는 중요 축"이라며 "우주 강국들과 상호 호혜적 협력을 통해 세계 우주항공 미래를 만들어 나가겠다"고 전했다.
우주항공의 날은 지난 2024년 5월 27일 우주항공청 개청에 따라 지정된 국가기념일로 올해 첫 기념일을 맞았다.
