이주호 대통령 권한대행 부총리 겸 교육부 장관이 28일 "오직 국민·국익 관점에서 우리 정부 성과는 성과대로 계승 발전시키고 과오는 과오대로 반면교사 삼아 위대한 국민들께서 피·땀으로 일군 자랑스런 대한민국을 한층 더 번영의 길로 이끌어 주시길 희망한다"고 밝혔다.
이 권한대행은 이날 오전 서울 종로구 정부서울청사에서 열린 현 정부 마지막 국무회를 주재하고 "일주일 후면 새로운 정부가 들어선다"며 "정부 출범 3년여 만에 마지막 국무회의를 개최하게 돼 국민 여러분께 송구하고 안타까운 심경"이라며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "뭣보다 소상공인·자영업자 등 팍팍한 국민들 삶을 가시적으로 개선시키지 못해 마음이 매우 무겁다"며 "중점두고 추진했던 일과 가고자 하는 방향을 국민께 좀 더 충실히 설명드리고 민심에 좀 더 귀 기울이지 못했던 점도 많은 아쉬움이 남는다"고 전했다.
이어 "5년을 바라보고 준비했던 국정 과제들이 끝을 보지 못하고 3년 만에 마무리돼 국민들께 송구스러운 마음이 크다"며 "지난 3년 정부가 나름 성과를 내고 극도의 정치적 불확실성을 비교적 조속히 극복할 수 있었던 건 모두 국민들께서 보내주신 지지·비판·성숙한 시민의식 덕분"이라고 했다.
또 "전례 없는 권한대행 체제 하에서 소속 공직자들을 이끌며 소관 업무를 빈틈없이 챙겨주신 장관들께 감사한다"며 "국무위원들께선 유종의 미를 거둘 수 있도록 굳건한 안보 태세 확립·국민 안전·공정 대선 관리 등 맡겨진 소임 완수에 마지막까지 최선을 부탁드리겠다"고 당부했다.
