기독교복음선교회(세칭 JMS, Jesus Morning Star) 언론홍보국은 6월2일 보도자료에서 “6월 1일 충남 금산에 위치한 월명동 자연성전에서 5,000여 명(주최측 발표)이 참석한 가운데, 설립자 정명석 목사가 처음 복음을 전한 날인 1978년 6월 1일 ‘알파날’ 47주년을 기념하는 행사를 개최했다”고 밝혔다.

자료에 따르면, 이 행사는 ‘복음의 시작 알파날’을 주제로 1부 주일예배와 2부 예술제로 진행됐으며, 대한민국을 비롯해 세계 77개국에 생방송으로 송출돼 전 세계 교인들이 함께했다.

그는 “고향 주변 광산굴에서 연단 받으며 깊이 기도하고 말씀을 받았다. 산으로 가면 좁은 방보다 넓고, 부모나 형제들의 간섭이 없어 의식이 분산되지 않아 좋았다”며 “비상시에 고구마 몇 개로 굶주림을 견디며 산속과 굴속 생활을 했다. 여름에는 벚나무 열매인 버찌, 야생 포도, 으름머루, 다래를 따 먹고, 가을에는 감을 따 먹으며 지냈다”고 강조했다.
정명석 목사는 서울로 올라와 본격적으로 말씀을 전하며 온갖 시련을 겪었으나, 예수님이 강하게 지키고 함께하셨기에 절대 포기하지 않고 하나님 뜻 하나만 붙들고 시대 복음을 전했다고 한다.
