대전 중구(구청장 김제선)가 여름철 풍수해로 인한 시민 피해를 사전에 차단하기 위해 노령 가로수에 대한 정비에 본격 착수했다.
특히 수령 50년 이상 된 버즘나무에 대한 전수 조사를 거쳐, 안전사고 위험이 높은 수목 67주에 대해 6월 중 제거 작업을 마무리할 계획이다.
중구에 따르면, 관내 전체 가로수 약 2만 1천여 주 가운데 2,500여 주(약 11.5%)가 버즘나무로 조성돼 있다.
버즘나무는 생장 속도가 빠르고 매연에 강하며 공기 정화 능력도 우수해 한때 도심 가로수의 대표 수종으로 자리 잡았다. 그러나 식재된 지 수십 년이 경과한 버즘나무에서는 최근 내부 조직이 썩는 ‘공동화’ 현상이 다수 확인되면서 안전성 문제가 제기돼 왔다.

이후에는 예산을 확보해 이팝나무 등 경관성과 안전성이 뛰어난 수종을 선정, 순차적으로 보완 식재를 추진한다는 방침이다.
