국민의힘이 대선에서 참패했다. 그러나 이번 패배는 단순한 정권 교체나 일시적 좌절로 축소할 수 없다. 그것은 곧 대한민국 보수 정치의 ‘존재 자격’에 대한 근본적인 의문이 제기된 사건이다. 윤석열의 계엄 선포와 헌법재판소의 전원일치 탄핵 결정 이후 치러진 이 선거는 사실상 오래전부터 예고된 참사였다. 정당과 정부, 그리고 보수 진영 전체가 국민으로부터 외면당한 이유는 단순하지 않다.
그러나 분명한 하나는 이들이 스스로를 돌아보지 않았다는 것이다. 정당 내에 다양한 의견이 숨 쉴 공간조차 없었던 폐쇄적 구조, 견해 차이를 ‘배신’으로 낙인찍는 진영논리, 권력을 위한 권력, 자리 보전을 위한 정치만이 남은 조직. 결국 보수는 스스로를 무너뜨렸다. 우리는 말이 아니라 행동으로 심판받았다. 국민은 무너지는 신뢰를 지켜보며 등을 돌렸다. 그 끝이 이번 선거였다.
이제는 진짜 질문을 던져야 한다. 우리는 헌법을 존중할 준비가 되어 있는가? 우리는 국민 앞에 다시 무릎 꿇고 처음부터 다시 시작할 수 있는가? 국민이 원하는 보수는 과거에 머무는 세력이 아니라, 미래를 책임질 세력이다. 헌정 질서에 대한 철저한 존중, 국민과의 계약을 지킬 책임감, 그리고 시대의 요구에 귀 기울이는 개혁 의지. 이것이 없다면, 보수는 더 이상 존재할 이유도, 국민의 선택을 받을 명분도 없다.
국민의힘이 추구하는 보수의 가치, 그 자체는 여전히 한국 사회에 필요한 축이다. 그러나 그 ‘필요성’은 결코 저절로 주어지지 않는다. 국민은 이제 과거에 머무는 보수가 아니라, 내일을 책임질 수 있는 보수를 요구하고 있다.
지금 이 순간이 마지막 기회다. 껍데기뿐인 자기 반성, 말뿐인 통합 시도, 책임 회피는 이제 설 자리가 없다. ‘국민의힘의 몰락’은 타인의 책임이 아니다. 헌법 앞에 무릎 꿇지 못한 자들의 역사적 결과물이다.
다시 일어설 것인가, 아니면 역사의 뒤안길로 사라질 것인가. 선택은 바로 지금, 우리의 손에 달려 있다. 더 이상 지체할 시간이 없다. jeongkeekim@naver.com

People Power Party - Will it rise again or disappear into the back alleys of history?

The People Power Party suffered a crushing defeat in the presidential election. However, this defeat cannot be reduced to a simple change of government or a temporary setback. It is an incident that raises fundamental questions about the ‘qualification for existence’ of conservative politics in the Republic of Korea. This election, which was held after Yoon Seok-yeol’s declaration of martial law and the unanimous impeachment decision of the Constitutional Court, was in fact a disaster that had been predicted long ago. The reason why the party, the government, and the entire conservative camp were turned away from the people is not simple. However, one thing that is clear is that they did not look back on themselves. An organization that was left with only a closed structure where there was no room for diverse opinions to breathe within the party, a factional logic that labeled differences of opinion as ‘betrayal,’ power for the sake of power, and politics for the sake of preserving one’s position. In the end, the conservatives destroyed themselves. We were judged not by words but by actions. The people turned their backs as they watched their trust crumble. This election was the end of that.
Now, we must ask real questions. Are we ready to respect the Constitution? Can we kneel before the people again and start over? The conservatives that the people want are not those who dwell on the past, but those who will take responsibility for the future. Thorough respect for the constitutional order, a sense of responsibility to keep the contract with the people, and a will to reform that listens to the demands of the times. Without these, conservatives have no reason to exist anymore and no justification to be chosen by the people.
The conservative values that the People Power Party pursues are still a necessary axis in Korean society. However, that ‘necessity’ is never given on their own. The people are now demanding conservatives who can take responsibility for tomorrow, not conservatives who dwell on the past.
This moment is the last chance. There is no place for superficial self-reflection, empty attempts at unification, and evasion of responsibility. The ‘fall of the People Power Party’ is not the responsibility of others. It is the historical result of those who could not kneel before the Constitution.
