도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 4일(현지시간) 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령과의 전화 통화 사실을 전하며 "좋은 대화였지만 즉각적 평화로 이어질 대화는 아니었다"며 "푸틴 대통령은 최근 (우크라이나에 의한) 공군기지 공격에 대응해야 할 것이라고 매우 강력히 말했다"고 밝혔다.
연합뉴스에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 '트루스소셜'에 올린 글을 통해 푸틴 대통령과 1시간 15분간 통화 사실을 공개 후 "우리는 우크라이나의 러시아 항공기 공격과 양측이 진행 중인 다양한 공격에 대해 논의했다"며 이같이 전했다. 최근 우크라이나는 기습적 드론 공격을 통해 러시아 장거리폭격기 등 항공기 수십대를 파괴한 가운데 푸틴 대통령의 보복 공격 의지를 전한 것이다.
이와 관련해 러시아 국영 '리아노보스티 통신'은 유리 우샤코프 크렘린궁 보좌관이 브리핑을 통해 "양 정상이 군용 비행장 공격 주제를 꽤 길게 다뤘다"며 "트럼프 대통령이 이 사건에 대한 우리 평가를 듣는 게 매우 유용했을 것"이라고 평가했다고 보도했다.
