도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 6일(현지시간) 중국과 오는 9일 영국 런던에서 무역회담을 가질 예정이라고 밝혔다.
이날 트럼프 대통령이 '트루스소셜'에 올린 글에 따르면 다음 주 스콧 베선트 재무장관이 이끄는 미국 협상팀이 영국 런던에서 중국 협상팀과 만나 무역협상을 재개한다는 것이다. 트럼프 대통령은 베선트 협상팀에 하워드 러트닉 상무장관·제이미슨 그리어 미 무역대표(USTR)도 참여한다고 설명했다.
그러면서 “만남이 매우 잘 진행돼야만 한다”며 “이 사안에 관한 여러분들 관심에 감사한다”고 전했다.
앞서 지난달 초 미국과 중국은 스위스 제네바에서 무역협상을 시작하기로 한 가운데 지난 5월 12일 공식 합의에 이르면서 서로 상호관세 및 보복관세를 중단한 바 있다.
하지만 그후에도 상호 갈등이 가라앉지 않으면서 트럼프 대통령이 중국을 비판하고 나선 가운데 중국은 미국이 반도체 수출 통제를 차별적으로 적용한다며 맞선 바 있으나 미·중 정상간 전화통화 및 오는 9일 무역협상 재개 등 속에 일단 수면 하에 가라앉은 형국이다.
