도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 11일(현지시간) 다음달 8일로 제시한 전 세계 무역 상대국과의 무역 협상 관련해 "시한을 연장할 용의가 있으나 기한을 연장하는 게 필요하진 않을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
연합뉴스에 따르면 이날 트럼프 대통령은 워싱턴DC 케네디센터를 방문한 가운데 '무역협상 기한 연장 용의는 있는 가'란 취재진 질의에 "그렇다"라면서도 "하지만 그럴 필요 있다고 생각하지 않는다"고 밝혔다. 앞서 지난 4월 2일 트럼프 대통령은 국가별 상호관세 부과 방침을 발표한 가운데 부과를 시작한 동월 9일 무역협상을 위해 관세를 90일간 유예하겠다며 현재 각국과 개별 협상을 진행해오는 중이다.
그러면서 "이제 특정 시점이 되면 (각국과 협상않고) 단지 서한을 발송할 것이며 이게 계약"이라며 "'당신은 이를 수용할 수도 거부할 수도 있다' 할 것"이라고 말했다.
또 영국·중국에 이은 어느 국가와 무역합의에 이를 것인지 여부 관련해선 "일본·한국과 협상하고 있다"며 "약 15개국과 협상하고 있으나 150개국 이상이 있고 그 모든 국가와 협상할 순 없다"고 밝혔다.
더불어 "따라서 약 1주 반이나 2주 후 각 국에 서한을 보내 내가 유럽연합(EU)에 한 것처럼 계약조건을 설명할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
앞서 지난 5월 16일 트럼프 대통령은 아랍에미리트(UAE) 방문 도중 "향후 2∼3주 이내 스콧(베선트 재무장관)과 하워드(러트닉 상무장관)가 미국서 사업을 하기 위해 그들이 내야 하는 것을 알려주는 서한을 보낼 것"이라고 밝힌 바 있으나 현재 3주가 더 지난 상황에서 아직 상호관세 관련 트럼프 행정부 서한이 무역 상대국에 발송됐다는 소식은 없다.
또 앞서 지난 5월 23일 트럼프 대통령은 EU와의 관세협상이 더디다며 모든 EU산 제품에 50％ 관세 부과를 전한 바 있는 가운데 이날 밝힌 시점에 실제 일방적 관세율 설정 여부는 미지수다. 이와 관련해 미국 경제주간지 '블룸버그' 통신은 "트럼프 대통령이 이 약속을 이행할지는 불확실하고, 종종 2주 시한을 설정했으나 그 시한이 늦어지거나 아예 이행되지 않았다"고 전했다.
