브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= 고려대학교 메디사이언스파크 ‘정몽구 미래의학관’ 준공식이 지난 16일 서울시 성북구 고려대학교 의료원 메디사이언스파크에서 개최됐다.
‘정몽구 미래의학관’은 인류의 건강과 행복을 증진하는 미래 의학을 연구할 목적으로 고려대학교 의료원이 설립한 의학 연구센터로, 백신혁신센터를 중심으로 유관 연구시설과 첨단 인프라가 구축돼 있다. 국내 첫 민간 주도 전 주기 백신 개발 플랫폼을 마련하고 국내 백신 주권 확립에 중추적 역할을 수행할 것으로 예상된다.
정몽구 명예회장은 2021년 국산 백신 개발과 연구 인프라 확충을 위해 고려대 의료원에 사재 100억원을 기부했으며, 고려대 의료원은 정 명예회장의 깊은 뜻을 되새기기 위해 연구센터를 ‘정몽구 미래의학관’으로 명명했다.
정몽구 명예회장은 코로나 19 팬데믹이던 당시 “현대차그룹을 성원해주신 국민들께 도움이 되기 위해 기부하게 됐다”며 “감염병을 극복해 건강과 행복을 되찾는데 조금이나마 힘이 되기를 바란다”며 사재를 희사했다.
이날 ‘정몽구 미래의학관’ 준공식에는 정의선 현대차그룹 회장 등 정몽구 명예회장 가족들과 김재호 고려중앙학원 이사장, 김동원 고려대 총장을 비롯 고려대 의과대학 및 교우회 관계자 100여 명이 참석했다.
정의선 회장은 인사말을 통해 “정몽구 명예회장님은 기업이 존재하는 가장 본질적인 가치가 국민의 행복이라고 믿었고, 의료인재 양성과 소외계층 진료 등 우리 모두가 건강한 삶을 영위하는데 관심과 지원을 아끼지 않으셨다”며 “명예회장님의 소중한 뜻이 ‘정몽구 미래의학관’이라는 이름으로 실현되는 이 자리에 있다는 사실이 감격스럽다”고 말했다.
이어 “정몽구 미래의학관이 대한민국의 백신 주권을 확보하고 세계 보건 위기에 주도적으로 대응할 수 있는 핵심 거점이 되기를 바란다”며 “여러분들의 헌신과 노력에 힘입어 정몽구 미래의학관이 인류 모두에게 ‘희망’을 안겨드릴 수 있게 되기를 진심으로 기원한다”고 강조했다.
준공식 테이프커팅과 헌정명판 제막식도 열렸다. ‘정몽구 미래의학관’ 1층에 설치된 헌정명판에는 “질병을 극복해 모두가 건강한 삶을 살아가는데 이곳 미래의학관이 기여하기를 희망합니다”라는 정몽구 명예회장의 메시지와 사진이 새겨져 있다.

참석자들은 ‘정몽구 미래의학관’의 주요 연구시설을 둘러보는 시간도 가졌다. 총 1만2213㎡ 규모로 지하 1층, 지상 6층 건물에 백신혁신연구센터, 생물안전센터 및 실험연구실, 유전자세포 치료 연구개발 및 디지털헬스 기반 정밀의학센터, 첨단치료기술 연구개발센터 등이 갖춰져 있다.
아울러 위험한 신종 병원체를 다루며 백신을 연구하는 대규모 생물안전 3등급 시설, 연구자들이 다양한 유형의 신종병원체를 종합적으로 연구할 수 있는 거대한 규모의 중앙 실험실을 비롯해 IVIS 광학영상시스템, 이미징 기반 초고속 세포 분석 장비, G3 로봇 워크스테이션 등 고가의 첨단 장비에 과감한 투자가 이뤄졌다.
‘정몽구 미래의학관’은 감염병 연구에 필수적인 후보물질 유효성 평가 시스템과 전 임상 연구 플랫폼 등을 완비해 신약 개발 등 다각도의 연구 거점으로 중요한 역할을 수행하고, 인류를 위협할 미래 감염병에 대비할 예정이다.
