G7(주요 7개국) 정상회의 참석차 캐나다를 방문한 이재명 대통령이 17일(현지 시간 이시바 시게루 일본 총리와 만나 "(한·일은) 마치 앞마당을 같이 쓰는 이웃처럼 떼려야 뗄 수 없는 관계"라고 했다.
이 대통령은 이날 오후 캐나다 앨버타주 캐내내스키스에서 이시바 총리와 취임 후 첫 한·일 정상회담을 갖고 "우리나라에선 한·일 관계를 가깝고도 먼 나라라고도 한다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "작은 차이들이 있으나 그런 차이를 넘어 한·일이 여러 면에서 서로 협력하고 서로에게 도움 되는 관계로 발전해 나가길 기대한다"며 "특히 국제통상환경이나 국제관계 어려움이 가중되고 있어 가까운 관계에 있고 또 보완적 관계에 있는 한·일이 많은 부분에서 협력하면 서로에 큰 도움 될 것으로 생각한다"고 했다.
또 "이렇게 직접 얼굴을 뵙고 만나게 됐는데 오늘을 계기로 한·일이 미래지향적으로 조금 더 나은 관계로 발전하길 기대한다"고 덧붙였다.
이시바 총리는 "이렇게 직접 만나는 건 처음이나 일본 TV 방송에선 매일 나온다"며 "그래서 처음 뵙는 것 같지 않다"고 말했다.
그러면서 "올해는 국교 정상화 60주년인 대단히 기념비적 해"라며 "얼마 전 서울에서 60주년 리셉션이 개최됐고, 대단히 많은 분이 참석했다 들었다"고 했다.

더불어 "간사이 엑스포가 개최 중이고 세계 곳곳서 많은 분들이 일본을 방문해 주고 계시지만 가장 많은 분이 한국서 왔다"며 "일본에서도 세계 각국을 방문하는 사람들이 많은데 일본인 중 가장 방문하는 사람들이 많은 국가는 한국"이라고 했다.
