브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 정동영 더불어민주당 의원이 23일 이재명 정부의 첫번째 통일부 장관 후보자로 지명됐다.
강훈식 대통령 비서실장은 이날 오후 2시 용산 대통령실에서 브리핑을 통해 정 의원을 비롯한 11명의 장관 후보자 지명 인선안을 발표했다.
정동영 의원은 이날 자신의 페이스북을 통해 "2004년 통일부장관 임명에 이어 20년이 지나 2025년에 다시 통일부장관 후보자로 지명됐다"면서 "남북관계는 그 어느 때보다 엄혹하고, 동시에 이재명 국민주권정부에 대한 기대는 높기만 한다. 그렇기에 20년 전보다 더 무거운 책임감을 느낀다"고 밝혔다.
이어 "제가 이재명 대통령의 당 대표 시절 유일하게 부탁한 것이 있었다"면서 "대통령이 되시면 저를 꼭 한반도평화특사로 보내주시라 했고 그렇게 하겠다고 약속한 사실이 있다. 아마도 이재명 대통령께서 그때의 약속을 떠올리며 저를 통일부장관 후보자로 임명한 듯하다"고 전했다.
그러면서 "성실하게 인사청문회에 임하겠다"고 각오를 다졌다.
한편 정동영 통일부장관 후보자는 개성공단을 성공시킨 공신으로, 한반도 문제에 정통하다는 평가를 받고 있다.
1953년 전북 순창에서 태어나 서울대 국사학과를 졸업했으며 MBC 기자 및 앵커 출신으로 정계에 입문했다. 이후 15, 16, 18, 20, 22대 국회의원으로 당선된 5선 의원이다.
노무현 정부 시절인 2004년 7월부터 2006년 2월까지 통일부 장관을 역임했으며 국가안전보장회의(NSC) 상임위원장도 지냈다.
통일부 장관이던 2005년 6월에는 대통령 특사로 방북해 김정일 국방위원장을 단독 면담했다.
문재인 정부 시기인 2018년 9월 평양에서 열린 남북정상회담에 특별수행원 자격으로 방북하기도 했다.
2007년 17대 대선에 도전 당시 '개성동영'을 구호로 내세웠을 정도로 개성공단에 대한 애착이 깊다. 2013년 발간한 저서 '10년 후 통일'에서 개성공단과 2005년 6자 회담의 9·19 합의가 '10년 후 통일'로 가는 두 바퀴가 될 것이라는 발언도 했다.
2007년 대선 당시 이재명 대통령은 정동영 캠프 비서실 수석부실장을 맡기도 하는 등 이 대통령과의 인연도 깊다.
강훈식 비서실장은 이날 브리핑에서 "정 후보자는 누구보다도 풍부한 경험과 한반도 평화에 대한 확고한 철학을 가진 인물"이라며 "북한과 대화 여건을 조성하고 한반도 긴장 완화 돌파구를 마련할 적임자"라고 평가했다.

Chung Dong-young, Lee Jae-myung government's first Minister of Unification nominated, "I will serve faithfully"

Meanwhile, Minister of Unification candidate Chung Dong-young is considered to be a contributor to the success of the Kaesong Industrial Complex and is well-versed in Korean Peninsula issues.
He was born in Sunchang, Jeollabuk-do in 1953, graduated from Seoul National University’s Department of History, and entered politics as a reporter and anchor at MBC. He was elected to the 15th, 16th, 18th, 20th, and 22nd National Assembly as a five-term member.
He served as Minister of Unification from July 2004 to February 2006 during the Roh Moo-hyun administration, and also served as the standing committee chairman of the National Security Council (NSC).
In June 2005, when he was the Minister of Unification, he visited North Korea as a special envoy to the president and met with Chairman Kim Jong-il.
In September 2018, during the Moon Jae-in administration, he also visited North Korea as a special envoy for the inter-Korean summit held in Pyongyang.
He has a deep attachment to the Kaesong Industrial Complex, to the point that he used the slogan “Gaeseong Dongyeong” when he ran for the 17th presidential election in 2007. In his book “Unification in 10 Years,” published in 2013, he also said that the Kaesong Industrial Complex and the September 19 Agreement of the 2005 Six-Party Talks would be the two wheels leading to “unification in 10 years.”
During the 2007 presidential election, President Lee Jae-myung also served as the chief deputy chief of staff of Chung Dong-young’s camp, showing a deep connection with President Lee.
