유한화학이 국내 제약업계 최초로 글로벌 과학기반 감축목표 이니셔티브(SBTi)로부터 ‘넷제로(Net-Zero)’ 목표 승인을 획득했다. 국내 원료의약품 CDMO(위탁개발생산) 분야를 대표하는 유한화학이 이번 승인을 통해 글로벌 수준의 ESG(환경·사회·지배구조) 경영 역량을 다시 한번 입증한 셈이다.
유한화학(대표이사 이영래)은 24일, SBTi로부터 자사가 수립한 단기 온실가스 감축 목표와 2050년 넷제로 달성 계획에 대한 공식 승인을 획득했다고 밝혔다. 이는 업계에서는 보기 드문 사례로, 유한화학의 선제적 기후 대응 전략이 국제적 검증을 받았다는 점에서 의미가 크다.
SBTi는 유엔글로벌콤팩트(UNGC), 탄소정보공개프로젝트(CDP), 세계자원연구소(WRI), 세계자연기금(WWF) 등이 공동 설립한 글로벌 이니셔티브로, 기업의 온실가스 감축 목표가 파리협정의 1.5℃ 목표에 부합하는지를 검증한다.
국내 제약업계 최초…명확한 감축 로드맵 제시
유한화학은 2023년 SBTi에 가입했으며, 이번 승인에 따라 ▲직접 온실가스 배출량(Scope1) 및 간접 전력 사용에 따른 배출량(Scope2)을 2032년까지 50.4% 감축하고, 2050년까지 90% 감축 ▲기업 가치사슬 전반에서 발생하는 간접 배출량(Scope3)도 2032년까지 30%, 2050년까지 90% 감축하겠다는 명확한 탄소중립 목표와 실천 로드맵을 갖추게 됐다.
이를 위해 유한화학은 고효율 설비로의 전환, 재생에너지 구매 확대, 태양광 발전 설비 도입, 자원순환 강화를 통한 감축 전략을 추진하고 있다.
특히 CDMO 분야 특성상 에너지 집약적인 공정이 많은 원료의약품 생산 분야에서 국제적 수준의 탄소 감축 목표를 수립하고 실행하는 것은 쉽지 않은 일로 평가된다. 이번 승인은 유한화학의 기술적 역량과 ESG 경영 노력이 구체적 성과로 이어지고 있음을 보여준다.
‘지속가능한 글로벌 CDMO’ 지향
유한화학은 이번 SBTi 승인을 계기로 글로벌 제약사들의 ESG 요구에도 능동적으로 대응할 수 있는 역량을 확보하게 됐다. 현재 글로벌 제약업계는 주요 공급망 파트너들에게도 SBTi 기반의 온실가스 감축 목표 이행을 요구하고 있어, 향후 유한화학의 글로벌 경쟁력 제고에도 긍정적 영향을 미칠 것으로 전망된다.

Yuhan Chemical (CEO Youngrae Lee), a leading Korean pharmaceutical CDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization) company, announced on the 24th that it has received official approval of its Net-Zero and near-term GHG reduction targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)—becoming the first in the domestic pharmaceutical sector to achieve this milestone.
The SBTi is a global body that helps companies align their GHG reduction targets with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C. It was jointly founded in 2015 by the UN Global Compact, CDP, WRI, and WWF.
Having joined SBTi in 2023, Yuhan Chemical has committed to reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 50.4% by 2032, and by 90% by 2050, compared to 2023 levels. Additionally, the company aims to cut Scope 3 value chain emissions by 30% by 2032 and 90% by 2050, ultimately achieving Net-Zero status.
To meet these goals, Yuhan Chemical is enhancing energy efficiency, expanding the use of renewable energy, introducing solar power systems, and promoting resource circularity.
CEO Lee commented, “Our SBTi Net-Zero target approval demonstrates that Yuhan Chemical is setting global-level climate action targets and has earned international recognition for them. We are proud to contribute to building a sustainable future alongside global pharmaceutical leaders.”
