브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= KT&G가 일손 부족으로 어려움을 겪는 잎담배 농가를 돕기 위해 잎담배 수확 봉사활동을 지난 27일 진행했다.
이날 봉사에는 원료사업소에 소속된 KT&G 임직원 20여 명이 참여했다. 봉사자들은 전라북도 임실군 관촌면에 위치한 잎담배 농가를 방문해 약 5000㎡(1500평) 규모 농지에서 잎담배 수확을 도왔다.
국내 농가들은 농촌인구의 지속적인 감소와 고령화로 노동력 확보에 어려움을 겪고 있다. 특히, 여름철에 수확이 이뤄지는 잎담배 농사는 기계화가 어렵고 대부분 수작업으로 진행돼 노동인력이 더욱 절실한 상황이다.
이에 KT&G는 2007년부터 매년 잎담배 농가를 방문해 19년간 봉사활동을 이어오고 있다. 봄철 잎담배 모종 이식 봉사에 이어 잎담배 수확에도 일손을 보태며 연중 농민들과의 상생을 이뤄 나가고 있다.
또한, KT&G는 국내 잎담배 농가의 복지증진을 위한 지원 사업도 꾸준히 펼쳐오고 있다. 이후 7월에는 잎담배 경작인 건강검진 비용과 자녀 학자금 지원을 위해 4억 원의 지원금을 전달할 예정이다.
김종오 KT&G 김천공장장은 “회사는 일손 부족으로 어려움을 겪는 잎담배 농가의 안정적인 경작활동을 지원하기 위해 매년 임직원 봉사활동을 진행하고 있다”며 “앞으로도 농민과의 상생을 위한 지원을 꾸준히 이어 나갈 것이다”고 말했다.
