충남 서산시 중왕리(1·2리) 마을이 해양수산부가 주관하는 '2025년 갯벌생태마을 지정 공모사업'에 선정되며, 전국 최초의 갯벌생태마을로 지정되는 쾌거를 이뤘다고 8일 밝혔다.
이번 공모사업은 우수한 갯벌 생태계와 수려한 경관을 보유한 해양(습지) 보호구역 내 마을을 선정하여 지속 가능한 발전을 지원하는 데 목적이 있다. 서산시는 이번 선정을 통해 총사업비 8억 6천만 원을 확보하게 되며, 중왕리 마을을 대상으로 관광시설 개선, 생태관광 인프라 확충, 환경보전 활동 지원 등을 적극적으로 추진할 계획이다.
2014년 어촌체험 마을로 지정된 바 있는 중왕리(1·2리)는 가로림만과 조화를 이루는 뛰어난 생태적 가치를 지녔으며, 이를 보전하기 위한 지역 주민들의 높은 관심과 참여가 돋보이는 곳이다. 특히, 해당 마을에서는 어촌 인구 유입을 위한 주거 기반 및 경제구조 마련, 어촌 자원 활용 수익 시스템 구축 등을 지원하는 '어촌신활력증진사업'도 활발히 진행되고 있다.
