여름철이면 반복되는 에어컨 사기 피해가 올해도 어김없이 불거지고 있다. 소비자 A씨는 투인원 에어컨 세척 비용으로 18만원을 냈지만, 기사에게서 “냉매가 부족하다”며 추가로 4만원을 더 요구받았다.
문제는 이런 수법이 흔하다는 점이다. 최근 무더위가 지속되면서 에어컨 수요가 급증하고, 제조사 서비스센터는 수리 대기만 1~4주가 걸린다.
이 틈을 타 ‘냉매 충전 사기’가 활개를 친다. 한철 장사인 만큼 다양한 방법으로 엉뚱한 비용을 청구하는 식이다.

정상 작동해도 “가스 부족하다”?
정직하게 일하는 에어컨 기사들까지 이런 사기 때문에 불신의 눈초리를 받는다. 하지만 알고 보면 피해는 단순한 정보 부족에서 시작된다.
기본적으로 에어컨은 실내 공기를 실외기로 빼면서 열을 식히는 구조다. 냉장고처럼 닫힌 공간이 아니어서 외부 조건에 따라 냉방 효율이 달라질 수밖에 없다. 특히 설치 예산에 맞춰 용량이 작은 제품을 쓰면 더울수록 냉방 효과가 떨어져 “우리 집 에어컨 왜 이렇게 안 시원하지?”라는 의심이 생긴다. 이때 사기꾼들이 “가스가 모자라다”고 접근하는 것이다.

사기 막는 가장 쉬운 자가점검법
에어컨 설치 전문기사에 따르면 사기를 막으려면 간단한 온도계 하나면 된다. 에어컨 흡입구(먼지 필터 부분) 근처 공기의 온도를 측정한 뒤, 에어컨 토출구(바람 나오는 곳)의 바람 온도를 비교해보면 된다고 조언한다.
흡입구 온도(실내온도)보다 10~15도 낮은 찬바람이 나온다면 그 에어컨은 정상이다.
예를 들어, 실내온도가 30도라면 에어컨 바람은 15~20도 정도로 나와야 한다. 이보다 차이가 작으면 성능이 저하됐을 가능성이 있지만, 정상 범위라면 가스가 부족할 가능성은 거의 없다.
반대로 냉매가 적정량보다 많이 주입된 경우에도 찬 바람이 나오지 않는다. 더욱이 과주입 상태에서는 컴프레셔 등 에어컨 핵심부품의 수명이 급격하게 저하될 가능성도 높아진다. 에어컨이 안 시원해서 수리기사를 불렀는데 과충전된 냉매를 빼기만 하고, 충전했으니 비용을 청구해 받아가는 사례도 있다.
또 점검할 때는 에어컨을 최소 1~2시간 꺼두었다가 다시 켜야 한다. 실외기가 과열된 상태에서는 정확한 진단이 어렵기 때문이다. 실외기가 실제로 작동하는지도 확인해야 한다. 스탠드형 에어컨의 경우 디스플레이에 환풍기 모양 불빛이 들어오면 실외기가 돌고 있다는 의미다.
만약 실외기 신호는 들어오는데도 돌아가지 않는다면 냉매 부족이 아니라 실외기나 PCB(제어회로) 고장일 수 있으니 정식 서비스센터에 수리를 맡기는 게 맞다.

“냉매 부족이 아닌 에어컨 평형 수가 작은 탓”인 경우가 대부분
에어컨이 시원하지 않다는 불만 중 상당수는 실제로는 ‘냉매 가스 부족’이 아니라 ‘에어컨 용량 부족’ 때문이다.
