도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 17일(현지시간) 미 보수 진영에서 논란인 '엡스타인 사건' 관련 자료를 최대한 공개하라고 지시했다.
미 'CNN' 'NYT(뉴욕타임스)'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 자신의 트루스소셜 글에서 "제프리 엡스타인에 대한 우스꽝스러울 정도로 막대한 매스컴 관심을 고려해 팸 본디 법무장관에게 모든 대배심 증언 자료를 공개토록 지시했다"고 밝혔다.
그러면서 "자료 공개는 법원 허용에 따라 결정돼야 한다"며 "민주당이 끌어온 이 사기는 지금 당장 끝나야 한다"고 강조했다.
본디 법무장관은 이날 “내일 연방법원에 대배심 증언 녹취록 공개 허가를 요청하겠다”고 밝혔다.
이와 관련해 'CNN'은 "(트럼프 대통령이) 추가 공개 압박에 굽힌 것으로 보인다"고 평했다.
또 이날 'NYT'는 "트럼프 대통령이 공개하라고 지시한 대배심 증언 녹취록만으론 투명한 사건 공개를 요구하는 목소리를 잠재우는 데 큰 도움이 안될 것"이라고 지적했다.
미성년자 성매매 등 혐의로 수감 중 스스로 목숨을 끊은 억만장자 엡스타인 사건은 최근 트럼프 대통령 지지 기반인 마가(MAGA)를 비롯한 미 보수층에서 논란이 일고 있다.
