도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 22일(현지시간) 페르디난드 마르코스 주니어 필리핀 대통령과 정상회담을 갖고 미·필리핀 간 무역합의를 타결했다. 이번 회담으로 필리핀은 기존 상호관세율 보다 낮게 적용받으면서 미국과의 군사협력까지 이끌어냈다.
이날 트럼프 대통령의 트루스소셜에 따르면 양 정상은 미 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 정상회담을 가진 가운데 트럼프 대통령은 "8월 1일부터 필리핀에 19% 상호관세율을 적용하기로 했다"며 이같이 밝혔다.
그러면서 "필리핀은 미국 제품에 무관세로 시장을 개방할 것"이라며 "우리는 군사적으로 협력할 것"이라고 전했다. 트럼프 대통령은 이날 회담이 끝난 후 트루스소셜을 통해 이같은 내용을 공개했다.
앞서 지난 21일 피트 헤그세스 미국 국방장관도 마르코스 대통령과 만난 자리에서 "동맹국인 미·필리핀 간 상호방위조약이 남중국해 포함 태평양 어디서든 적용된다"며 "이 조약은 남중국해를 포함한 태평양 어디서든 우리 군대·항공기·공공 선박(해상경비대 소속 포함)에 대한 무력 공격에 적용된다”고 강조한 바 있다.
미국이 필리핀에 오는 8월 1일부터 적용할 19% 상호관세율은 앞서 지난 9일 트럼프 대통령이 마르코스 대통령에게 보내는 서한에 적시한 20%에서 1% 포인트 인하된 것이다.
마르코스 대통령은 트럼프 대통령 두 번째 임기 들어 백악관을 찾은 첫 동남아시아 정상으로 회담 시작 전 "미국은 우리나라의 가장 강력하고 가까우며 신뢰할 수 있는 동맹"이라고 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 "양국이 활발한 교역을 이어오고 있으며 이번 무역 협정의 막대한 규모가 앞으로 더욱 확대될 것"이라고 전했다. 미국은 지난해 필리핀과의 상품 교역에서 약 235억불 규모 중 50억불 가까운 무역적자를 기록한 바 있다.
한편 트럼프 대통령은 이날 중국 방문 계획 관련 언론 질의에 "아마도 그리 머지않은 미래에 중국을 방문해 시진핑 중국 국가주석과 만날 것"이라고 밝혔다.
