도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 27일(현지시간) '아직 미국과 상호관세 관련 무역 합의를 안 한 대다수 국가 상호 관세율이 15∼20%로 매겨질 것'이라고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 영국 스코틀랜드 턴베리 소재 자신의 골프 리조트에서 키어 스타머 영국 총리와 만난 가운데 취재진과의 질의응답을 통해 이같이 전했다. 지난 4월 시행된 일괄 10% 관세 대비 훨씬 높은 수치로 사실상 일괄 관세 부과 가능성을 시사한 것이다.
그러면서 "(관세율은) 15∼20% 사이 어디인 가 일 것"이라며 "두 숫자 사이일 것"이라고 밝혔다.
이어 "이 같은 관세율이 적용되는 국가는 주요 교역 상대국을 제외한 약 200개국"이라며 "(15∼20% 관세는) 그 나라들이 미국서 물건 팔 때 치러야 할 비용"이라고 설명했다.
또 이날 미국과 3차 고위급 무역협상을 시작한 중국 관련해선 "일본·인도네시아·필리핀 등이 자국 시장을 미국에 개방했다"며 "(중국도) 시장을 개방하면 좋겠다"고 말했다.
더불어 일본의 자동차·쌀 시장 개방에 대해 "쌀 시장 개방이 아주 컸다"며 "일본은 여태껏 다른 어떤 나라에도 쌀 시장을 열어준 적 없었다"고 평했다.
트럼프 대통령은 외국산 의약품 관련한 품목별 관세 부과에 대해선 "조만간 발표하게 될 것"이라고 밝혔다.
앞서 지난 15일 트럼프 대통령은 무역확장법 232조에 근거한 의약품에 대한 품목별 관세에 대해 단계적 부과 구상을 밝히며 '이르면 이달 말 발표될 것'이라고 예고한 바 있다.
앞서 지난 25일 트럼프 대통령은 "협상을 타결했거나 진행 중인 주요 국가를 제외한 다른 나라들 관세는 서한이 나가면 그게 바로 거래"라며 "많은 나라들을 상대하고 있기 때문에 거의 200통 서한을 보낼 예정"이라고 밝힌 바 있다.
미국은 현재까지 영국·EU(유럽연합)·일본·베트남·인도네시아·필리핀 등과 새 무역 합의를 체결한 가운데 오는 8월 1일 상호관세 부과에 앞서 한국·캐나다·멕시코 등 나머지 무역 상대국과 계속 협상을 벌이는 중이다.
