도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 7일(현지시간) '볼로디미르 젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령과의 회담과 관계없이 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령을 만날 것'이라고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신' 프랑스 'AFP 통신' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 취재진과 만나 "푸틴 대통령은 젤렌스키 대통령과 만남에 동의할 필요 없이 나와 만날 수 있다"며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "그들(푸틴·젤렌스키)은 나와 만나고 싶어 하고, 나는 살상을 멈추기 위해 할 수 있는 모든 것을 할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
앞서 푸틴 대통령은 "트럼프 대통령과 내주 만나길 희망하며 회담 장소는 UAE(아랍에미리트)가 될 수 있다"며 "나는 이미 여러 차례 말했지만 (젤렌스키 대통령과 회담에) 전반적으로 반대하지 않으며 가능하다"고 밝힌 바 있다.
그러면서 "이를 위해선 일정한 조건들이 조성돼야 한다"며 "유감스럽게도 그런 조건이 마련되기까진 아직 갈 길이 멀다"고 일말의 여지를 남겼다.
젤렌스키 대통령 역시 텔레그램을 통해 "우크라이나는 회담을 두려워하지 않으며 러시아에도 같은 용기 있는 접근을 기대한다"며 "이젠 전쟁을 끝낼 때"라고 밝힌 바 있다.
