대통령실이 22일 "한·미동맹 현대화는 안보가 더 튼튼해지는 방향으로의 현대화이자 한·미 연합방위태세가 더 강화되는 것"이라고 전했다.
위성락 국가안보실장은 이재명 대통령 방미에 앞서 이날 오후 용산 대통령실에서 열린 기자간담회에서 "안보 측면에서의 한·미동맹 현대화는 이번 미국 방문 목표 중 하나"라며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "북핵 미사일 위협 증대·우크라이나 전쟁 등으로 역내 불안정성이 커지는 상황서 동맹을 국익에 맞게 현대화 할 필요가 있다"며 "주한미군 전략적 유연성 등을 포괄하는 동맹 현대화는 미 측 요청으로 꼽히는 의제이나 정부로서도 한·미 안보협력 강화 방향에서 이 문제에 적극 접근하겠다'고 했다.
또 "통상경제 안정화 경우 한·미는 7월 말 관세협상 타결로 어느 정도 진전을 이룬 바 있다"며 "이번엔 이 협상을 정상 차원 의제로 격상시켜 양국 합의를 공고히 할 것"이라고 했다.
이어 "동맹에 대한 여러 도전이 많은 상황서 한·미는 새 협력 분야를 개척할 필요가 있다"며 "원자력·조선·인공지능·반도체·국방 분야 연구개발 등이 새 협력 지평이 될 수 있다"고 했다.
더불어 "이 대통령은 도널드 트럼프 대통령과의 회담 외 미 재계 인사들과의 비즈니스 라운드 테이블 행사 참석·미 싱크탱크 전략국제문제연구소(CSIS) 초청 특강 등 일정을 소화 예정"이라고 전했다. 또 알링턴 국립묘지 헌화·필라델피아 '서재필 기념관' 방문 일정 등도 진행된다.
위 실장은 방미에 앞선 한·일정상회담 개최 관련해선 "일본은 급변하는 국제정세 속 유사 입장을 지닌 이웃이자 협력 파트너"라며 "미국발 새 통상질서로 한·일 간 더 많은 전략적 소통 필요성이 생겼고, 이번 방문을 계기로 셔틀외교가 한·일 외교 새 모델로 발전하길 기대한다"고 전했다.
또 "정부는 한·미동맹과 한·일 간 협력 파트너십을 기반으로 한 한·미·일 협력을 외교 중심축이라 생각한다"며 "한·일 협력을 발전시키고 그 선순환 모멘텀을 활용해 과거 문제에 대해서도 유연하고 전향적 논의가 가능토록 여건을 조성하고자 한다"고 덧붙였다.
한편 위 실장은 전날 조현 외교부 장관의 갑작스런 미국 출국 관련해선 "원래 외교부 장관은 (정상회담) 직전 미국에 가서 마지막 점검을 하고 조율도 할 계획을 갖고 있었다"며 "그 과정에선 산업부 장관·통상교섭본부장도 참여하고, 성공적 정상회담을 위해 점검하는 절차에 있다"고 밝혔다.
이 대통령은 오는 25일 미 워싱톤 DC에서 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령과 취임 후 첫 대면하는 가운데 양자 실무회담을 가질 예정이다.
