도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 5일(현지시간) 미 조지아주 현대차그룹·LG에너지솔루션 합작 배터리 공장 건설현장에서 이뤄진 이민 단속 관련해 "내 생각에 그들은 불법 체류자였고, 이민세관단속국(ICE)은 자기 할 일을 한 것"이라고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 열린 행정명령 서명행사에서 언론과의 질의응답 속 관련 질의에 "그 사건에 대해 (이민단속 당국) 기자회견 직전 들었다"며 "하지만 조금 전 있었던 그 사건에 대해 아는 게 없다"고 답했다.
그러면서 수색 대상이 된 현대차그룹이 앞서 미국에 대규모 투자 계획을 밝힌 것에 대해 "그들은 우리나라서 자동차·물건들을 팔 권리가 있다"며 "
아시다시피 이건 일반적 거래가 아니다"고 했다.
또 '이민 단속·제조업 활성화란 정책 목표 충돌' 지적 관련해선 "우리는 다른 나라와 잘 지내길 원하며 훌륭하고 안정적 노동력을 원한다"고 답했다.
이어 "거기서 일하는 불법 체류자들이 많이 있었다"며 "그들(이민 당국)은 그들 일을 하고 있으며 해야 할 일을 한 것"이라고 강조했다.
더불어 "그들(불법 체류자들)은 (전 미국 대통령)바이든 정부 때 넘어온 사람들로 불법 입국한 것"이라며 "그래서 우리는 우리 일을 해야 한다"고 밝혔다.
애비게일 잭슨 미 백악관 부대변인은 이날 "미국은 주요 투자 본거지가 된 걸 자랑스럽게 생각한다"며 "트럼프 대통령이 확보한 이런 역사적 투자·파트너십을 바탕으로 계속 발전해 나가길 기대한다"고 밝혔다. 이번 이민 단속이 미국에 대한 외국인 투자를 훼손할 수 있다는 주장을 일축한 것이다.

앞서 전날 미 국토안보수사국(HSI)·이민세관단속국(ICE)·마약단속국(DEA)·조지아주 순찰대 등은 조지아주 서배너 인근 브라이언 카운티 소재 현대차·LG에너지솔루션 합작 배터리 공장 건설 현장서 대규모 이민 단속 작전을 벌인 결과 475명이 체포됐고 대다수가 한국 국적인 것으로 드러났다.
미 당국에 따르면 체포된 직원들은 미국에 불법 입국했거나 체류 자격 위반 상태서 불법적으로 일하고 있었던 것으로 밝혀졌다.
