8일 경북도의회 교육위원장 박채아를 비롯한 서울·부산·대전·울산·강원·충북·충남·경남·인천 등 10개 시·도의회 교육위원장들은 “최교진 후보자는 도덕성과 자질, 정치적 중립성 어느 것 하나도 갖추지 못했다”며 “교육부 장관으로서 결격 사유가 명백하다”며 비판의 입장을 밝혔다.
성명에 따르면 최 후보자는 2003년 혈중알코올농도 0.187% 상태에서 음주운전을 하다 적발돼 벌금형을 선고받은 전력이 있으며, 천안함 폭침과 관련해 음모론적 시각을 드러내는 등 편향적 행보로 논란을 일으켰다.

이어 “교육부 장관은 대단한 인물이 아니라 상식과 양심, 올바른 철학을 갖춘 사람이면 충분하다”며 “최 후보자는 그 기준조차 충족하지 못한다”고 목소리를 높였다.
또한 “정부는 국민적 불신을 무겁게 받아들여 최 후보자의 지명을 즉각 철회해야 한다”며 “최 후보자 역시 스스로 사퇴해 교육계와 국민 앞에 사죄하라”고 촉구했다.
이번 성명에는 경북도의회 박채아 위원장을 비롯해 서울시의회 박상혁, 대전시의회 이금선, 부산시의회 강무길, 울산시의회 안대룡, 강원도의회 이영욱, 충북도의회 이정범, 충남도의회 이상근, 경남도의회 이찬호, 인천시의회 이용창 위원장이 이름을 올렸다.
