지난 9월9일 점심 때 최진 대통령리더십연구원 원장(박사)을 만났다. 필자는 최진 원장을 지난 1990년에 만나, 지금까지 교유해왔다. 최진 대통령리더십연구원 원장(박사)은 그 동안 중도층(中道層)의 정치세력화를 주장해왔다.
이 분은 “중도시대는 합리적이고 이성적인 중도와 중도층-중도지도자-중도세력이 중심이 되는 세상“이라면서 ”화합-통합-융합을 추구하는 ‘3합(合) 주의’와 함께 탈정치-탈이념-탈진영의 ‘3탈(脫) 주의’를 제시했다.
또한 ‘중도는 중간이 아니라 중심이다’ ‘중도는 좌우를 배제하는 것이 아니라 좌우를 포용한다’ ‘중도는 정당이 아니라 인물을 본다’ ‘중도는 투쟁이 아니라 협상을 좋아한다’ ‘중도는 제로섬 게임이 아니라 윈윈 게임을 만들어낸다’ ‘중도가 세상을 바꾼다’ 등의, 정치 표어를 만들어냈다.

필자에게 “당신의 이념(理念) 성향이 어디쯤이냐?”고 물으면 “중도(中道) 또는 중도 좌(左)쯤”이라고 말해왔다. 그러하니 중도 정치 세력화의 지도자인 최진 박사와 궤를 같이하는 셈이다.
한쪽 눈의 시력(視力)을 상실했다면? 이는 이 세상을 제대로 볼 수 없을 것이다. 좌(左)와 우(右)에 치우쳐 있었던 역대 대통령들이 잇따라 집권해온 나라의 모순이 어디에 있는가를 알게 해주는 이유이다.
최진 박사는 필자를 만난 자리에서 “대한민국에 반드시 중도 대통령 시대가 온다”고, 확신에 찬 말을 했다. 좌-우 이념의 정치지도자 시대가 지나가고, 중도 전성시대가 온다“는 것이었다.
현재 정권치권에서 중도 성향을 띈 정치인을 거명하라면, 안철수-한동훈-오세훈-김민석-김동연-정동영-박지원 등을 꼽을 수 있다. 정청래-장동혁 등 좌우에 치우친 정치 지도자들도 중도로 이동 중이다.
필자에게 “누구한테 줄을 서 겠느냐?”고 물으면 “최진 박사에게 줄을 서겠다!”고 답하련다.
최진 박사의 뒤를 따르면, 이 분이 중도지도자를 뒤따를 터이니, 나도 자동적으로 중도 지도자를 뒤따를 것이기 때문이다. 나(문일석)는 곧 중도주의자라는 말이다.
