도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 18일(현지시간) "석유·가스 판매로 전비를 조달해 온 푸틴이 유가가 떨어지면 (러·우크라) 전쟁을 끝낼 것"이라고 전망했다.
영국 '로이터 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 두 번째 영국 국빈 방문 마지막 날인 18일(현지시간) 버킹엄셔 영국 총리 별장 체커스에서 키어 스타머 영국 총리와 양자 정상회담 후 가진 공동기자회견에서 "우크라이나 전쟁이 미국엔 영향을 미치지 않으나 좋은 소식이 있길 바라고, 나에게 우크라이나 전쟁을 해결할 의무가 있는 것 같다"며 이같이 밝혔다.
그러면서 "푸틴 대통령과 내 관계 때문에 우크라이나 문제가 가장 쉬울 거라 생각했는데 그가 나를 정말 실망시켰다"며 이스라엘·팔레스타인 간 가자지구 분쟁 문제 관련해선 "복잡하다"고 밝혔다.
이날 미·영 양국은 약 470조의 경제 협력 합의를 이룬 가운데 트럼프 대통령은 스타머 총리와 우크라·가자지구 전쟁 문제 등도 두루 논의했다.
또 현재 진행 중인 중국과의 무역 협상에 대해선 "타결에 가까워지고 있으며 양국 간 관세 휴전을 이어가겠다"며 "중국과 고율관세 부과 유예를 연장할 수도 있으며 그건 지금과 같은 조건을 기반으로 한 연장일 것이고 매우 좋은 조건"이라고 헀다.
미·중은 관세 전쟁을 벌이다 지난 5월 스위스 제네바에서 열린 첫 무역 협상에서 각각 115%포인트씩 관세율을 낮추기로 합의 후 유예기간을 90일씩 연장하면서 협상을 이어가는 중이다.
스타머 총리는 "트럼프 대통령과 우크라이나 방위 지원·푸틴 대통령에 대한 압박 강화 방법을 논의했고, 추가 압박이 필요하다"며 "가자지구 상황을 용납할 수 없어 우리는 평화 로드맵 필요성에 절대적으로 동의한다"고 밝혔다.
양 정상이 가자지구 전쟁에 따른 유혈사태 종식을 위한 평화 로드맵이 시급하다는 데는 뜻을 같이했으나 트럼프 대통령은 조만간 팔레스타인을 국가로 인정하려는 영국 정책에 대해선 "그 부분에선 총리와 의견이 불일치한다"며 "사실 우리 사이 몇 안 되는 의견 불일치 중 하나"라고 밝혔다.
또 "아프가니스탄으로부터 바그람 공군기지를 반환받기 위해 노력 중"이라며 "(바그람 공군) 기지를 원하는 이유 중 하나는 중국이 핵무기를 만드는 곳에서 1시간 떨어진 곳이기 때문"이라고 밝혔다. 바그람 공군기지는 미군이 지난 2021년 8월 아프가니스탄에서 철수때까지 작전본부 역할을 해온 곳이다.
그간 트럼프 대통령은 전임 조 바이든 정부의 아프간 철군 과정에서 빚어진 혼란을 비판해온 가운데 바그람 공군기지가 중국 영향력 아래 놓였다고 주장해 왔고, 아프가니스탄 측은 부인하고 있다.
