도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 8일(현지시간) 이스라엘·팔레스타인 무장 정파 하마스 간 가자 지구 전쟁 종전 협상 관련해 "내가 아마도 이번 주말 일요일 이집트에 갈 수도 있다"고 밝혔다.
미 'CNN' 'AP 통신' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 '안티파(반 파시즘 운동)' 관련 회의를 주재하며 현재 이집트에서 진행 중인 가자 지구 종전 협상 관련해 "협상이 타결될 거라 생각하며 충분히 가능성 있다"며 "지금 (협상 관여하는) 대부분 사람이 그곳에 모여 있다"며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 회의 중 마코 루비오 국무장관에게서 가자 지구 종전 협상 상황 관련 쪽지를 전달 받은 후 "중동에서의 협상 타결이 매우 임박했고, 그들은 꽤 빨리 나를 필요로 할 거란 국무장관 메모를 방금 받았다"고 전했다.
이어 "협상이 모든 이슬람·아랍 국가 협조로 잘 진행되고 있고, 이전엔 없었던 일로 상황이 확실해지면 알려주겠다"며 "마지막 협상 대상은 하마스로 현재까진 잘 진행 되고 있으며 우리는 아마도 일요일 또는 토요일 저녁께 (중동 현지로) 출발 예정"이라고 전했다.
