서구에 따르면, 아라동은 개청 이후 지속적인 인구 증가로 2025년 9월 말 기준 인구수는 7만 3,728명에 이르렀으며, 인구 과밀화로 인한 행정·복지업무의 효율성 저하 우려가 꾸준히 제기됨에 따라 보다 효율적인 행정체계를 마련하기 위해 분동이 추진됐다.
서구는 2025년 2~3월 아라동 주민을 대상으로 추진한 분동 경계와 명칭에 대한 의견 수렴 결과를 반영하여 원당대로를 기준으로 남측은 아라1동, 북측은 아라2동으로 구분하는 분동 계획을 2025년 5월 확정하였다.
새로 설치되는 아라1동은 검단신도시 SOC복합청사(해든초 옆)에서 업무를 시작하며, 아라2동은 기존 아라동 청사에서 계속 업무를 진행하여 주민 혼란을 최소화할 예정이다.
