도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 20일(현지시간) 상호 관세 무역 협상 관련해 "중국과 한국·일본·EU( 유럽연합)과 체결한 무역 협정처럼 매우 공정한 협정을 체결할 걸로 기대한다"고 밝혔다.
미 'AP 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 열린 앤서니 앨버니즈 호주 총리와의 정상 회담에서 "경주 APEC(아시아태평양경제협력체) 정상 회의 계기로 시진핑 중국 국가 주석과 회담 예정이고 매우 좋은 관계를 유지하고 있다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "EU도 우리를 이용하려 했으나 더는 아니며 우리는 매우 공정한 무역협정을 체결했다"며 "일본과도 매우 공정한 무역 협정을 체결했으며 시 주석과 만나는 장소 한국과도 공정한 협정을 했다"고 밝혔다.
앞선 무역 협상 과정에서 이미 합의된 한국의 대미 투자금 3500억불(약 497조 7000억) 선불 지급 사안을 재차 확인시킨 것이다.
이어 "아마 시 주석과 매우 공정한 협정을 체결할 것이며 대부분 우리와 함께 할 것"이라며 "매우 흥미로울 것이고 양국(미·중) 모두에 좋은 뭔가를 만들 것"이라고 밝혔다.
또 "한국을 떠날 때 아닐 수도 있으나 우리는 매우 강력한 무역 협정을 체결할 것이라 생각하며 양측 모두 만족할 것"이라며 "중국은 우리를 매우 존중해왔고 관세 형태로 엄청난 돈을 우리에게 지불해 왔으며 (대미 관세) 55%를 지불하고 있고, (무역) 협정이 체결 언 되면 11월 1일 잠재적으로 155%까지 인상될 수 있다"고 밝혔다.
더불어 "우리와 거래하지 않으면 중국은 큰 곤경에 처하게 될 것이고 버틸 수 있을지 모르겠다"며 "그들이 위대해지길 번영하길 바라지만 함께 번영해야 한다"고 강조했다.
트럼프 대통령은 "중국이 미국과의 무역 갈등 국면에서 희토류를 무기화하며 수출 통제를 한 것에 대응해 관세뿐 아닌 또 다른 협상 레버리지를 확보하고 있다"며 "그들은 희토류로 우리를 위협했고, 나는 관세로 맞섰으나 항공기 같은 다른 많은 것들로 그들을 위협할 수 있다"고 밝혔다.
또 미 항공기 제조업체 보잉사를 거론하며 "그들은 비행기 부품을 구할 수 없기에 우리는 부품 공급을 중단할 수 있고 실제 중단했다"며 "그들이 첫 번째 (희토류) 위협을 했을 때 (그 조치는) 매우 컸으며 그들은 400대 이상 비행기 운항이 중단됐다"고 전했다.
이어 "(자신의) 지난 집권 1기 당시 중국과 맺은 무역 협정이 조 바이든 전 대통령 시기 이행되지 않았다"며 "이제 그런 대통령은 없기에 결국 중국과 환상적 렵정을 맺게 될 것이며 훌륭한 무역 협정이 될 것이고 양국에 환상적일뿐 아닌 세계 전체에 환상적일 것"이라고 했다.
그러면서 "시 주석으로부터 초청받아 내년 초 중국을 방문할 예정"이라며 "어느 정도 세팅돼 있다"고 전했다.
더불어 '중국의 2027년 대만 침공 가능성 관련해 인도·태평양에서 오커스(AUKUS·미국·영국·호주 안보 동맹)가 중국 억제 수단이 될 수 있는가'란 취재진 질의에 "그렇다. 중국은 그런 일을 하고 싶어 하지 않는다"며 "하지만 우리가 그것(오커스 통한 중국 억제)을 필요하게 될 거라 보지 않는다"고 밝혔다.
