다누리아쿠아리움은 지난 15일 정식 등록을 완료했으며, 시·군 단위에서는 드물게 자연사 분야 전문과학관으로 인정받았다.
이번 등록을 계기로 다누리아쿠아리움은 과학문화 확산과 생태교육의 거점 역할을 본격적으로 수행하게 된다.
전문과학관은 「과학관의 설립·등록 및 운영 등에 관한 법률」 제5조에 따라 ▲100㎡ 이상의 전시실 ▲30점 이상의 과학기술자료 ▲전문직원 1명 이상 등 엄격한 요건을 충족해야 한다.
다누리아쿠아리움은 ▲남한강 토속어류 전시실, 수달전시관, 아트리움, 에코리움 등 5,600㎡ 규모의 전시 및 체험공간 ▲법정보호종 및 멸종위기종 등 30점 이상의 과학기술자료 ▲연구사·전문 사육사 등 전문 인력을 모두 갖춰 등록 요건을 충족했다.

이에 따라 초·중·고 학생 대상 생태교육, 멸종위기종 보전연구, 하천 생태계 조사 등 단양군의 과학문화 기반 교육사업이 한층 탄력을 받을 전망이다.
2012년 개관한 단양 다누리아쿠아리움은 남한강 토속어류를 주제로 한 아시아 최대 규모의 민물 생태전시관으로, 천연기념물 어름치와 멸종위기종 열목어 등 319종 3만여 마리의 수생생물을 보유하고 있다.
또한 기획전시실, 수달전시관, 아트리움, 에코리움 등 주제별 전시공간을 통해 수생태계의 다양성을 체험형으로 전시하고 있으며, ‘나도 아쿠아리스트 체험’, ‘멸종위기종 생태교실’ 등 생태교육 프로그램도 운영 중이다.
