이중근 대한노인회장(부영그룹 회장)이 유엔 창설 80주년을 맞아 열린 ‘유엔의 날’ 기념식에서 유엔데이를 국가 공휴일로 재지정할 것을 다시 한 번 제안했다.
지난 24일 부산 UN기념공원에서 열린 기념식에는 박형준 부산시장, 김진아 외교부 2차관, 주한 외교사절 등 300여 명이 참석했다. 이 회장은 유엔군 참전용사들의 희생을 기리며 헌화한 뒤 “유엔군의 헌신이 오늘날 대한민국의 번영을 가능하게 했다”며 “유엔의 날을 공휴일로 지정해 그 은혜를 기억해야 한다”고 강조했다.
유엔데이는 1945년 10월 24일 유엔 창설을 기념해 제정됐으며, 우리나라는 1975년까지 법정공휴일로 지정했으나 1976년 폐지됐다. 이 회장은 지난 9월 40만 명 서명부를 국회에 전달하며 공휴일 재지정 운동을 이어오고 있다.
그는 앞서 2015년 23개 유엔참전국 참전비 건립비용을 지원, 유엔군의 희생을 기리는 상징물을 조성한 데 이어, 『6·25전쟁 1129일』 역사서를 1000만 부 이상 무료 배포하며 올바른 역사 인식 확산에도 힘써왔다.
이 회장의 지속적인 호국보훈 활동과 제안에 힘입어 지난 8월에는 양부남 의원 등이 ‘유엔데이 공휴일 재지정 법안’을 발의하는 등 사회적 공감대가 확산되고 있다.

Lee Joong-keun, President of the Korean Senior Citizens Association (Chairman of the Booyoung Group), reiterated his proposal to re-designate UN Day as a national public holiday during the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations' founding.
The commemorative ceremony, held on the 24th at the UN Memorial Cemetery in Busan, was attended by over 300 people, including Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Jin-ah, and foreign diplomatic envoys residing in Korea. After laying a wreath to honor the sacrifice of the UN forces veterans, Chairman Lee emphasized, "The dedication of the UN forces made today's prosperity of the Republic of Korea possible," and stressed, "We must remember their grace by designating UN Day as a public holiday."
UN Day was established to commemorate the founding of the United Nations on October 24, 1945. In South Korea, it was designated a legal public holiday until 1975 but was abolished in 1976. Chairman Lee has been continuing the movement for the re-designation of the holiday, having delivered a petition with 400,000 signatures to the National Assembly in September.
He previously supported the construction costs for the memorial monuments of the 23 UN participating nations in 2015, creating symbols to honor the UN forces' sacrifice. Furthermore, he has been dedicated to spreading correct historical awareness by freely distributing over 10 million copies of the history book, The 1,129 Days of the Korean War.
Thanks to Chairman Lee's ongoing patriotic and veteran support activities and proposals, social consensus is growing, with Assemblyman Yang Bu-nam and others having proposed a 'Bill for the Re-designation of UN Day as a Public Holiday' in August.
