도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 31일(현지시간) 중국이 합성 마약 펜타닐 및 원료 밀수출 단속시 펜타닐 관련 중국에 부과한 관세의 철폐 가능성을 밝혔다.
미 '블룸버그 통신' 'CNN' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 플로리다주 마라라고로 향하는 미 대통령 전용기 에어포스 원 기내에서 "이 문제(펜타닐)를 시진핑 중국 국가주석과 논의했다"며 "중국은 매우 열심히 노력하고 있고, 정말 중국이 그럴 인센티브가 있다 생각한다"고 전했다.
그러면서 "그걸(중국 정부 펜타닐 단속) 보는 대로 우리는 나머지 (관세) 10%를 없앨 것"이라고 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 취임 후 중국이 펜타닐 차단에 비협조적이라며 20% 관세를 부과했으나 지난 30일 '2025 경주 APEC(아시아태평양경제협력체)' 계기 미·중 정상회담에서 중국의 협력 약속을 받고 소위 '펜타닐 관세' 세율(20%)을 10%로 인하했다.
미·중 정상회담 합의에 따라 미국은 중국산 제품에 대한 최대 100% 추가 관세 부과 계획 철회와 함께 중국산 선박의 미국 항만 입항료 부과 유예 및 펜타닐 관련 관세 인하 등 조치에 나섰다.
또 중국은 희토류 자석 수출 제한 강화 계획 철회와 함께 미국산 대두 등 농산물 수입을 재개키로 한 가운데 이는 향후 1년간 한시적 유지되며 향후 양국은 재협상에 나설 예정이다.
트럼프 대통령은 마크 카니 캐나다 총리가 로널드 레이건 전 대통령을 등장시킨 관세 광고에 사과했으나 캐나다와의 무역 협상이 재개되진 않을 것이라고 전했다.
