도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 4일(현지시간) "민주당 미치광이들이 자기들 표로 모든 걸 막아버리면 공화당은 어떤 상식 기반 정책도 통과시킬 수 없다"고 밝혔다.
미 'AP 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 자신의 트루스소셜 글에서 "(공화당이) 필리버스터를 종결할 핵 옵션을 실행하지 않는다면 민주당이 중간 선거·다음 대선에서도 훨씬 더 유리할 것"이라며 '핵 옵션' 사용을 통한 셧 다운(일시적 업무 정지)' 종결을 공화당에 촉구했다.
민주당 성향 연방 정부 셧 다운 사태 최장기화를 앞두고 공화당 의원들에게 연방 의회 상원의 '필리버스터(무제한 토론 통한 합법적 의사진행 방해)' 종결을 거듭 요구한 것이다. 지난 10월 1일부터 시작된 셧 다운 사태는 종전 최장 기록(35일·2018년 12월 22일∼2019년 1월 25일)을 넘어설 조짐이다.

더불어 "뭣보다 중요한 건 우리가 수년 간 꿈꿔왔으나 단 한 번도 이루지 못한 모든 위대한 공화당 정책들을 통과시키는 것"이라며 "우리는 결코 패배하지 않는 현명한 정당이 될 것"이라고 했다.
앞서 지난 10월 30일 트럼프 대통령은 핵 옵션 사용을 공화당에 촉구하는 글을 자신의 트루스소셜에 올린 바 있다. 핵 옵션은 연방의회 의사 규칙을 변경해 필리버스트 종결 투표 의결 정족수를 60명에서 과반(51명)으로 줄이는 것이다.
