박 의원은 “당정의 혐오 조장 현수막 철거 법률 재정비 발표는 시민들의 힘으로 이루어낸 성과”라며, “무분별한 혐오와 차별, 허위사실로부터 시민을 보호하기 위한 역할을 멈추지 않겠다”고 강조했다.
그는 지난 10월 혐오현수막 신고센터를 출범시킨 이후, APEC을 앞두고 서울시내에 난무한 혐오·비방 현수막에 대해 강력히 비판하며, 각 지자체에 옥외광고물법 위반 현수막에 대한 적극적인 철거와 대응을 촉구해왔다. 직접 현장을 방문해 부착 상황을 점검하기도 했다.
신고센터에는 총 1,000건에 달하는 혐오현수막 신고가 접수되었으며, 일부는 게첩 기간이 초과되었거나 시민 안전을 위협하는 방식으로 부착되어 있었음에도 방치된 사례도 있었다. 박 의원은 시민 신고 사례를 바탕으로 지자체와 철거 협의를 진행했다.
하지만 옥외광고물법 제5조 2항 5호를 위반한 차별적 현수막에 대해서는 지자체별로 재량에 따라 철거 여부가 달라지는 문제가 있어 법·제도 개선의 필요성이 제기됐다. 일부 지자체는 신고 접수 후 해당 조항 위반을 명시하며 극우정당에 경고 공문을 발송하는 등 적극적인 대응을 보이기도 했다.
