최민호 세종시장은 12일 인천에서 열린 제8회 한일시장지사회의 본회의에서 행정수도 세종 완성을 인구 및 지방 소멸 위기 극복을 위한 유일한 해법으로 강조했다.
이번 회의는 한국 5개 시도와 일본 9개 현 등 총 14개 한일 광역자치단체장이 참석해 경제산업 협력과 인구감소 문제 대응 방안을 논의하는 자리로 마련됐다.
최 시장은 한일 양국 모두 초저출생과 수도권 과밀화가 심화하면서 사회 전반에 구조적 위기를 초래하고 있다고 지적하며, 수도권 일극화를 완화하고 지방 자립성을 높이는 노력이 공동 과제로 다뤄져야 한다고 밝혔다.
특히 그는 “행정수도 완성은 인구 감소와 지방 소멸 문제의 근본적 해결책”이라며, 중앙행정 기능의 세종 이전은 단순한 도시개발을 넘어 국가 위기에 대응하고 미래도시로서 발전할 전략적 행보라고 설명했다.
세종시가 국가균형발전의 상징으로 탄생했음을 강조하면서 조속한 행정수도 완성으로 지속가능한 대한민국 미래를 만들어야 한다고 역설했다.
또한 최 시장은 세종시 자족기능 강화를 위한 구체적 방안으로 중부권 메가 싱크탱크 조성과 수도권 명문대 세종 유치, 글로벌 산업인재 육성 체계 구축 등을 제시하며, 국책연구기관과 대덕연구단지를 연계한 두뇌집중지구 완성과 외국인 기술인재 양성을 위한 국제폴리텍대학 설립 계획도 소개했다.
한일시장지사회의 참석자들은 공동합의문에 서명하고 협의회장 주최 공식 만찬을 가지며 양국 지방정부 간 협력 강화 의지를 다졌다.
최 시장은 “한일 국교 정상화 60주년을 맞아 인구 감소와 지방 소멸이라는 공동 위기를 함께 극복하는 의미 있는 자리였다”며, 일본 지방정부와의 지속적 교류와 협력을 약속했다.
