이재명 대통령이 17일(현지시간) 아랍에미리트(UAE)를 방문해 가진 현지 동포 만찬 간담회에서 "대한민국 국민임이 자랑스런 생각이 들도록 대한민국이 여러분들의 든든한 뒷배경이 돼 드리겠다"고 밝혔다.
이 대통령은 이날 아부다비 시내 한 호텔에서 열린 간담회에서 "한·UAE는 형제 국가를 넘어 양국 역량을 합쳐 함께 연구하고 생산하고 제3세계로 진출하는 일종의 경제적 공동체로 발전해 나가야 된다고 생각하며 그렇게 만들어가기로 논의 중"이라며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "UAE는 대한민국과 닮은 점이 참 많고 일종의 가교 역할을 하는 지정학적 위치에 있고 또 한편으로 가진 게 별로 없다"며 "강대국 사이에 끼어 있는 작은 나라기도 하고 대한민국도 인류사에 기록될 만한 엄청난 성장·발전을 해낸 것"이라고 했다.
또 "UAE도 정말 위대한 나라란 생각이 들고 유럽·중동·아프리카를 잇는 거점 연결 고리 역할을 해내겠지만 그 이상을 넘어 세계의 새 중심이 돼 갈 것 같다는 생각이 든다"고 했다.
이어 "앞으로 중동·아랍 쪽에서도 UAE는 한국의 베이스 캠프 역할을 하게 될 것"이라며 "함께 손잡고 새로운 공동 번영 길을 확실하게 열어 젖힐 것이라 생각되며 그 안에 여러분도 계신다"고 했다.
장광덕 UAE 한인회장은 "한·UAE는 단순한 협력을 넘어 미래를 함께 설계하는 특별 전략적 동반자로 더 큰 비전을 향해 나아가고 있다"며 "교민들은 공동 번영 길을 함께 걸어가겠다"고 밝혔다.
이 자리엔 동포 단체 대표·경제인·민주평화통일자문회의 자문위원·한글 학교 관계자·문화 예술인·국제기구 종사자 등이 참석했다.
이 대통령은 18일(현지시간) 무함마드 빈 자이드 알나하얀 UAE 대통령과 정상회담을 갖는다.
