토흔(吐痕) 이종능 도예가. 그는 “이제, 불지핀 가마 속으로 걸어 들어갈 준비가 됐다!”라고 말했다. 도예가 이종능(58년생)은 흙을 빚어 굽는 일을 40년 해오면서 이제야 "스스로 흙이 될 자신이 있는가?"라는 절대자의 질문에 답을 할 수 있게 됐다." 는 확신이 서서 전시를 결정했다. 고 했다.
2025년 12월 3일부터(수) 12월 7일(일) 까지 인사동 통인화랑 3층 전시관에서 전시를 하게 될 테마는 "우주" 다 .
흙을 빚어 빈 그릇을 만드는 이 본능적 행위가 무엇에서 근거하는가? 라는 스스로의 질문에 "우주"라는 대답을 하는데 40년이 걸렸는데 "21세기의 세상 사람들은 그가 만든 "우주"라는 허공에 무엇을 담고자 하는지 무척 궁금하다." 가 지금, 전시를 시작하는 변이다.

토흔(吐痕)의 창시자, 도예가 이종능
■흙과 불, 그리고 인간의 본질을 빚다
“흙과 불은 서로 거짓말을 할 수 없습니다. 흙은 연민이고, 불은 열정입니다. 흙과 불은 곧 사람의 이야기지요.”
평생을 흙과 불을 껴안고 살아온 도예가 지산 이종능은 이 단 한 문장으로 자신의 예술세계를 설명한다. 그에게 도자(陶瓷)는 단순한 공예가 아니라 존재의 철학, 그리고 ‘비움과 채움’을 동시에 품은 인간의 우주다.
40년 동안 그는 빈 그릇을 빚어왔다. 그리도 오랫동안 비워내며 채워온 그 공간을 그는 “우주”라 불렀다. 그리고 마침내 그는 말한다. “이제, 불을 지핀 가마 속으로 걸어 들어갈 준비가 끝났다.”

이종능이 창시한 ‘토흔(吐痕)’은 흙의 표면에 남은 생명의 숨결과 불의 흔적을 쫒아 기어이 우주의 그림자라도 잡아 보려는 무모하고도 무진장의 인내가 필요한 창작법이다. 그는 인위적 장식이나 완벽을 거부하고, 자연과 인간이 공존하는 흔적 그대로를 쫒아 우주의 잔영을 흙 속에 남긴다. 토흔의 미학은 ‘비움의 미(美)’이자 *순환의 철학’이다.
그가 만드는 빈 그릇은 단순한 용기가 아니라, 시간과 생명을 갈아 넣어 미궁 같은 허공을 만들어 내는 일이다. 그건 “흙이 인간이 되고, 인간이 다시 흙으로 돌아가는 길에 통과하는 버뮤다같은 공간”을 상징한다.

지난 40년 동안 뉴욕, 워싱턴, 런던, 도쿄, 오사카, 두바이, 아부다비, 러시아 등 세계 주요 도시에서 초대전을 만행하듯 치르며 한국 도자미의 현대적 정수를 전도 해 온 이종능을 카피라이터인 필자(오치우)는 딱 한마디로 소개했다.
