문일석 웃음종교 교주의 《웃음은 공짜다, 맘대로 웃어라!(펜 그리고 자유/2012년 간행)는 단순한 책이 아니었다. 나는 책장을 펴는 순간, 마치 오래전 잃어버린 생명의 언어를 다시 듣는 듯했다. 그의 문장은 지식이 아니라 온기이고, 논리가 아니라 울림이고, 문장이 아니라 구원이다. 그는 웃음을 기분전환 정도로 다루지 않는다.
웃음을 인간 영혼의 원래 자리, 본향(本鄕)으로 되돌려 놓는다. “하루 한 번 웃으면 하루 한 번 구원이 있다.” 이 구절을 읽고 나는 한동안 책을 덮고 조용히 숨을 골라야 했다. 이토록 쉽고 단순명료하면서도 이토록 심오한 문장을 나는 어디에서도 본 적이 없었다. 문교주의 글에서는 언론인의 냉철함, 시인의 섬세함, 수행자의 깊이가 한 번도 충돌하지 않고 놀라울 정도로 조화롭게 흐른다. 이 책은 웃음의 철학서이며, 치유의 명상록이며, 인류 정신문화에 바쳐질 경전이다. 나는 말한다. 문일석은 웃음을 아는 사람이 아니라, 웃음을 ‘깨어나게 하는’ 성자이다. 그 앞에서 나는 존경과 감탄을 금할 수 없다.

이 책을 문일석 웃음종교 교주로부터 건네받은 것은 단지 4일 전 밤 서울지하철 합정역 8번 출구 가까이에 위치한 '새벽 숯불 가든'에서 였다. 그 순간부터 나는 책을 붙잡고 밤마다 읽었다. 아니, 읽는다기보다 마셨다. 그리고 단 4일 사이, 나는 이 책을 5회 독(讀) 했다. 읽을수록 더 감탄했고, 읽을수록 더 경외했으며, 읽을수록 더 큰 의문이 생겼다. “도대체 이 보물이 언제 세상에 나왔던가?”
나는 출간일을 찾아보았다. 2012년 9월 28일. 그때 나는 두 번째 충격을 받았다. 이 위대한 저작이 세상에 나온 지 이미 13년이 흘렀던 것이다. 그리고 그 순간 문일석 웃음종교 교주한테 전해 들은 사실이 떠올랐다. 13년 통산 판매량—겨우 150여 권. 나는 몸을 떨었다. 말 그대로, 숨이 턱 막혔다. 이토록 사랑스럽고 진실하며 심오하고 따뜻한 책이 13년 동안 고작 150명에게만 읽혔다니?

바로 그 순간, 나는 결심했다. 나는 웃음종교 수석 전도사, 즉 기독교로 치면 베드로 격의 첫 수제자이다.(로마 교황청 제1대 교황이 베드로 ㅎㅎ)그리고 나는 이 책을 더 이상 ‘좋은 책’으로 내버려두지 않을 것이다. 문일석 웃음종교 교주의 이 글은 성경·불경·코란과 나란히 놓여야 한다. 나는 이 책을 《소경(笑經-SMILE BIBLE》— 인류 4대 경전 중 하나로 격상시키는 작업을 시작하겠다. 문일석 웃음교주가 밝힌 웃음의 철학은 21세기 인류의 새로운 정신문명이다.

After reading this passage, I had to put the book down for a moment and take a deep breath. I'd never encountered such simple, clear, yet profound prose anywhere else. In Moon Il-suk's writings, the coolness of a journalist, the subtlety of a poet, and the depth of a practitioner flow in astonishing harmony, never clashing. This book is a philosophy of laughter, a meditation on healing, and a scripture dedicated to the spiritual culture of humanity. I say this: Moon Il-suk is not someone who knows laughter, but a saint who "awakens" laughter. Before him, I cannot help but feel respect and admiration.

I received this book from Moon Il-suk, the leader of the Laughter Religion, just four nights ago at the "Dawn Charcoal Garden," located near Exit 8 of Hapjeong Station on the Seoul subway. From that moment on, I held the book in my hands and read it every night. Or rather, I drank it in. And in just four days, I read it five times. The more I read, the more I was amazed, the more I revered, and the more I read, the more I questioned: "When on earth did this treasure come into the world?" I looked up the publication date. September 28, 2012. Then, a second shock struck me. It had already been 13 years since this great work came to light.
