이익태 화가(78세)가 12월7일, 심근경색으로 별세했다. 장례식장은 서울 성북구 종암동 뉴타운 장례식장. 12월9일 오전 발인.

조문호 사진작가는 8일자 페이스북에 추모의 글을 게재했다. 이 글에서 “예술로 세상을 꽃피운 이익태 선생, 잘 있으란 말도 없이 떠나셨네. 뒤 돌아 보지도 않고 떠나셨네. 부디, 저승의 꽃 그늘에서 편히 쉬세요”면서 “전방위 예술가 이익태(78세)선생께서 지난 7일 심근경색으로 돌아 올수 없는 먼 길을 떠나셨습니다. 선생은 우리나라 최초의 독립영화로 꼽히는 '아침과 저녁 사이'를 연출한 영화감독이자 1970년대 초 파격적인 도전을 감행했던 전위 해프닝 그룹 '제4집단'의 멤버로 활동했습니다. 1977년 화가의 꿈을 안고 미국으로 건너가 본격적으로 그림 작업에 몰두해 뉴욕주 클라리마이너 화랑 국제전에서 1위를 차지하는 등 수차례 국제전에서 입상했습니다. 고인은 그림에만 머물지 않고 퍼포먼스 그룹을 창단해 소리와 비주얼에 무게를 둔 연극이나 실험적 퍼포먼스를 벌였습니다. 퍼포먼스를 비롯하여 사진, 설치, 회화 등 장르를 넘나들며 왕성한 예술 활동을 펼치다 조용히 잠들었습니다. 이제 편히 쉬시기 바랍니다.”고 기술했다.
