포항시는 2026년 1월 농림축산식품부 공모에 사업을 신청하고, 6월 국비 확보를 거쳐 본격적인 착공에 들어갈 계획이라고 10일 밝혔다.
이번 사업은 지역 농산물 유통 혁신과 농가 소득 증대를 목표로 한다. 특히 첨단 기술을 접목한 물류 시스템과 농민 참여형 운영 방식을 도입해 경북권 농산물 유통의 핵심 허브로 육성한다는 구상이다.
센터는 국비 150억 원이 투입돼 포항 북구 기계면 일원에 건립된다. 사과·배·포도·딸기·버섯 등 다양한 품목을 대상으로 연간 5000톤에서 최대 2만 톤까지 처리할 수 있는 규모다. 집하·선별·포장 시설은 물론, 최신 냉온 저장고와 냉장 수송 장비, 위생·가공시설 등도 함께 갖춘다.
특히 인공지능(AI) 기반 자동선별·등급 판정 시스템을 도입해 품질의 균일도와 물류 효율성을 높일 계획이다. 농민 직접 참여 운영을 통해 중간 유통 단계를 줄이고 직거래를 확대해 수익성을 강화하는 모델도 함께 추진한다.
포항시는 이 유통센터가 단순 물류시설을 넘어 생산자와 소비자를 잇는 상생 플랫폼 역할을 수행할 것으로 기대하고 있다. 지역 농업 경쟁력을 끌어올리는 기반이자 농가와 소비자 모두에게 실질적인 이익을 제공하는 새로운 유통 구조를 만들겠다는 구상이다.
이상범 포항시 농업정책과장은 “산지유통센터는 지역 농산물을 아우르는 유통 거점으로 농가 소득 증대와 자립 기반 마련에 중요한 역할을 할 것”이라며 “국비 확보와 사업 추진에 만전을 기하겠다”고 말했다.
