파주시는 지난 9일 운정4동 일대의 교통정체 해소와 광역 교통망 강화를 위해 야당~상지석 간 동측 연결도로를 개통했다고 밝혔다.

이번 도로는 야당동 남측의 김포~관산 간 도로와 상지석동 북측의 신도시~설문 간 도로를 남북으로 잇는 구간으로, 연장 1.2km, 폭 12m 규모의 왕복 2차선으로 조성됐다.
개통식에는 김경일 파주시장을 비롯해 박대성 파주시의회 의장, 시도의원, 지역 주민 등 100여 명이 참석해 색줄 자르기 행사를 진행했다.
파주시는 파주경찰서와 협의를 거쳐 개통식 직후인 9일 18시부터 해당 도로를 임시 개통했다.
운정4동 지역은 경의중앙선 야당역과 운정역이 가까워 개발 압력이 높고 인구가 꾸준히 증가하고 있으나 기반 시설은 상대적으로 부족한 상황이었으며 파주시는 이를 개선하기 위해 시비 219억 원과 국비 60억 원을 확보해 ’21년 9월 실시설계를 완료하고 ’23년 6월 토지 보상을 마무리한 뒤 같은 해 7월 착공해 공사를 추진해 왔다.
향후 한국토지주택공사에서 추진 중인 지방도 358호선 김포~관산 간 도로와 이번에 개통된 야당~상지석 간 동측 도로가 연결되면 광역 교통 접근성이 크게 높아지고 교통량 분산 효과도 기대된다.
김경일 파주시장은 “야당~상지석 간 동측 연결도로 개통으로 운정4동 주민의 교통편의가 증진될 것”이라고 말했다.
