경기북부보훈지청은 최근 3개 군단이 주관한 6·25전사자 합동영결식에 잇따라 참석하며, 70여 년 만에 고국 품으로 돌아온 호국영웅들을 애도했다.
제7군단(11월 6일), 제1군단(11월 27일), 제5군단(12월 17일)이 각각 주관한 영결식에는 보훈단체장, 지자체, 군 장병 등 1,000여 명이 참석해 오랜 시간 홀로 잠들어 있던 전사자들의 넋을 기렸다.

8개월간 54구 유해 발굴...전쟁의 상흔 되새겨
올해 진행된 유해발굴 작업은 전쟁의 치열함을 다시금 확인시켜줬다.
제7군단은 3월부터 16주간 홍천 금물산, 가평 상천리, 포천 이곡리 등에서 15구의 유해를 찾아냈다.
제1군단은 5월부터 10월까지 6·25전쟁 초기 격전지였던 영평산 등 4개 지역을 집중 발굴했다.
1951년 중공군의 신정 공세와 4월 공세 당시 1사군단과 유엔군이 치열한 전투를 벌였던 이곳에서 9구의 유해와 함께 3,600여 점의 유품이 수습됐다.
가장 대규모 작업을 펼친 제5군단은 3월부터 11월까지 29주 동안 연 16,000여 명을 투입해 포천, 연천, 철원, 화천 일대를 샅샅이 뒤졌다.
그 결과 30구의 유해와 탄약, 보급품 등 9,887점의 유품을 발굴하는 성과를 거뒀다. 제5군단은 2014년부터 매년 발굴 작전을 전개해 올해까지 총 1,112구의 유해를 찾아냈다.
"한 분 한 분 끝까지 찾아내겠다"
합동영결식은 엄숙하게 진행됐다.
국기에 대한 경례와 묵념에 이어 유해발굴 경과 보고, 추모사, 축문 낭독, 종교의식, 헌화 및 분향 순으로 이어졌으며, 조총과 함께 다시 한번 묵념하는 시간을 가졌다.
박용주 경기북부보훈지청장은 "어려운 여건에도 묵묵히 최선을 다해준 발굴부대 장병들에게 깊은 감사를 드린다"며 "아직도 이름 모를 산야에 홀로 잠들어 계시는 수많은 호국영령 한 분 한 분을 끝까지 찾을 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다"고 밝혔다.
이어 "국가를 위해 헌신하신 유공자와 유족에 대한 예우와 감사의 문화가 널리 확산될 수 있도록 노력하겠다"고 덧붙였다.

Nine remains and approximately 3,600 artifacts were recovered from these areas, where fierce fighting between the 1st Division and UN forces took place during the Chinese Communist Army's Sinjeong Offensive and the April Offensive in 1951.
The 5th Corps, which conducted the largest-scale excavation, deployed approximately 16,000 personnel over 29 weeks from March to November, thoroughly searching the Pocheon, Yeoncheon, Cheorwon, and Hwacheon areas.
