[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 시민의 손으로 세워질 부산독립운동기념관이 18일 첫 삽을 떴다.
부산시는 이날 오전 10시 부산시민공원 시민사랑채 백산홀에서 ‘부산독립운동기념관’ 착공식을 개최했다. 광복 80주년을 앞두고 열린 이번 행사는 부산 독립운동의 의미를 시민과 공유하고, 기념관 건립의 본격적인 시작을 알리기 위해 마련됐다.
박형준 시장, 부산시의회 의장, 시교육감, 보훈단체장, 시민단체, 학생 등 300여 명이 자리를 함께한 가운데, 영상상영, 경과보고, 기념사, 축사, 축하공연, 기념 세리머니 순으로 진행됐다.
부산 최초 독립운동 전문기념관
기념관은 부산시민공원 내 시민사랑채를 리모델링해 조성된다. 총사업비 180억 원을 투입해 연면적 2,378㎡, 지상 2층 규모로 지어진다. 내부에는 ▲추모공간 ▲상설·기획전시관 ▲체험·교육공간 ▲복합문화공간 등이 들어서며, 단순 전시를 넘어 시민이 참여하는 역사·문화 플랫폼으로 운영될 예정이다.
2027년 상반기 개관 목표
부산시는 올해 착공을 시작으로 전시 설계와 콘텐츠 개발을 병행해 2027년 상반기 개관을 목표로 추진한다. 이미 기미독립선언서, 백범일지 등 독립운동 관련 유물 602점을 확보했으며, 추가 기증과 시민참여 프로그램을 통해 전시 자료를 지속 확충할 계획이다.
또한 디지털 실감형 전시와 청소년 체험 교육을 강화하고, 도슨트 해설 프로그램과 야외 체험 행사로 시민과 관광객의 참여를 확대한다.

‘일상 속 보훈’과 연계한 역사교육장
시는 독립운동기념관을 ‘일상 속 보훈’을 실천하는 공간으로 운영할 방침이다. 2026년에는 보훈명예수당 확대, 현충시설 정비, 국외 사적지 탐방 등 보훈정책을 강화하고, 개관 이후에는 교육청·보훈단체와 연계해 특별전과 청소년 역사교육을 운영할 예정이다.
박형준 부산시장은 “부산은 항일 독립운동의 중심지이자 뜨거운 독립정신을 품은 도시”라며 “그 정신을 오늘의 가치로 되살리고 미래세대가 자긍심을 가질 수 있도록 부산독립운동기념관을 대한민국 대표 보훈·역사 공간으로 만들겠다”고 밝혔다.

Mayor Park Heong-joon, the chairperson of the Busan Metropolitan Council, the superintendent of the Office of Education, leaders of veterans’ and civic organizations, and students—about 300 participants in total—attended the event, which featured a video presentation, progress report, commemorative and congratulatory speeches, cultural performances, and a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony.
Busan’s First Memorial Dedicated to the Independence Movement
The memorial will be created by remodeling the Citizen Sarangchae within Busan Citizens Park. With a total project cost of 18 billion won, it will cover a total floor area of 2,378 square meters and rise two stories above ground. The facility will include a memorial space, permanent and special exhibition halls, experience and education rooms, and a multi-purpose cultural zone. Going beyond traditional exhibitions, it aims to serve as a participatory history and culture platform for citizens.
Opening Scheduled for the First Half of 2027
Starting with the groundbreaking this year, the city will proceed with exhibition design and content development in parallel, aiming to open the memorial in the first half of 2027. The city has already secured 602 independence-related artifacts, including the *Declaration of Independence* and *Baekbeom’s Diary*, and plans to expand the collection through additional donations and citizen participation programs.
The memorial will feature immersive digital exhibitions and youth education programs, as well as docent-led tours and outdoor activities to encourage active engagement from citizens and visitors alike.
A Center for Everyday Remembrance and Education
Busan also plans to operate the memorial as a space that embodies the idea of “everyday remembrance,” connecting citizens with the spirit of national independence. In 2026, the city will strengthen its veterans’ policies by expanding honorary allowances, improving memorial facilities, and supporting overseas heritage programs. After the memorial’s opening, Busan will collaborate with the Office of Education and veterans’ organizations to host special exhibitions and youth history education programs.
Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “Busan has always been a stronghold of the independence movement and a city defined by its indomitable spirit. We will make the Busan Independence Movement Memorial Hall a leading national center for remembrance and history, a place where future generations can take pride in that enduring spirit.”
