취리히에서 기차를 타고 윈터투어를 거쳐 슈타인 암 라인(Stein am Rhein)까지 다녀왔다.
이동 시간은 약 1시간 10분 정도. 중간에 한 번 갈아타야 해서
초행자라면 살짝 번거롭게 느껴질 수 있지만, 막상 도착하고 나면 그 수고가 전혀 아깝지 않다.
슈타인 암 라인은 라인강과 보덴호수가 만나는 지점에 자리한 작은 도시다.
이 위치 덕분에 이미 중세 이전부터 사람들이 모여 살았고,
11세기 초 수도원을 중심으로 본격적인 도시가 형성되었다고 한다.
예전에는 강을 따라 이동하던 상인들이 꼭 들르던 무역의 요충지였다고 하는데,
그래서인지 작은 도시임에도 집들과 거리에서 묘하게 단단한 역사감이 느껴진다.
구시가지에 들어서면 가장 먼저 눈에 들어오는 건 화려한 프레스코화로 장식된 고전적인 건물들이다.
이 장식들은 단순한 장식이 아니라, 과거 무역으로 부를 쌓은 상인들이
자신의 부와 신념을 표현하던 방식이었다고 한다.
덕분에 지금도 마을 전체가 하나의 야외 미술관처럼 느껴진다.
도시는 아펜셀을 떠올리게 하는 분위기를 지니고 있다. 규모는 작고, 골목은 단정하며,
사람들의 발걸음도 느리다. 인터라켄이나 루체른처럼 관광객으로 붐비지 않아,
호수가를 따라 조용히 산책하기에 더없이 좋다.
바람에 흔들리는 물결과 오래된 건물들이 어우러진 풍경을 보고 있으면,
이곳이 큰 전쟁이나 산업화의 영향을 거의 받지 않고
중세의 모습이 그대로 보존된 도시라는 말이 자연스럽게 이해된다.
잠시 벤치에 앉아 강을 바라보고 있자니,
한때 이 강을 따라 수많은 배들이 오가며 이 작은 도시를 지나쳤을 모습이 그려진다.
지금은 조용한 소도시지만, 오랜 시간 동안 사람들의 삶과 이야기가 차곡차곡 쌓여
지금의 슈타인 암 라인을 만들었다는 느낌이 든다.
화려함보다는 차분한 아름다움, 빠른 관광보다는 느린 산책이 잘 어울리는 곳.
스위스에서 조금 덜 알려졌지만, 그래서 더 기억에 남는 도시가 바로 슈타인 암 라인이었다.
I took a train from Zurich to Stein am Rhein via Winterthur,
a journey of about one hour and ten minutes.
Since it requires one transfer, it might feel a bit inconvenient for first-time visitors,
but once you arrive, the effort feels completely worthwhile.
Stein am Rhein is a small town located where the
Rhine River meets Lake Constance.
Thanks to this strategic location, people have lived here since before the Middle Ages,
and the town began to take shape in the early 11th century around a monastery.
It was once an important stop for merchants traveling along the river,
and even today, you can sense that deep-rooted history in the streets and buildings,
despite the town’s modest size.
As you enter the old town,
the first thing that catches your eye is the row of historic houses decorated
with colorful fresco paintings. These were not merely decorative—
Wealthy merchants used them to express their prosperity and beliefs.
Because of this, the entire town feels like an open-air museum.
The atmosphere is reminiscent of Appenzell:
small in scale, neatly arranged streets, and an unhurried pace of life.
Unlike places such as Interlaken or Lucerne, it isn’t crowded with tourists,
making it perfect for a quiet walk along the water.
Watching the gentle ripples of the lake alongside the centuries-old buildings,
it becomes easy to understand how this town has remained largely untouched
by war or industrialization, preserving its medieval character.
Sitting on a bench and gazing at the river,
I imagined the countless boats that must have once passed through here.
Though now a peaceful small town, Stein am Rhein feels like a place where layers of lives
and stories have quietly accumulated over centuries.
Rather than flashy attractions, it offers a calm and understated beauty;
Instead of rushed sightseeing, it invites slow walks. Less famous than other Swiss destinations,
but perhaps for that very reason, Stein am Rhein remains especially memorable.
チューリッヒから列車に乗り、**ヴィンタートゥールを経由してシュタイン・アム・ライン
（Stein am Rhein）**を訪れた。所要時間は約 1時間10分。
途中で一度乗り換えがあるため、初めての人には少し面倒に感じるかもしれないが、
到着してみるとその手間がまったく気にならなくなる場所だった。
シュタイン・アム・ラインは、ライン川とボーデン湖が合流する地点に位置する小さな町だ。
この立地のおかげで中世以前から人が暮らし、
11世紀初頭に修道院を中心として町が形成されたという。
かつては川を行き交う商人たちの重要な中継地だったそうで、
規模は小さいながらも、街並みからはしっかりとした歴史の重みが感じられる。
旧市街に足を踏み入れると、まず目に飛び込んでくるのは、
色鮮やかなフレスコ画で飾られた歴史ある建物たちだ。
これらは単なる装飾ではなく、当時の裕福な商人たちが自らの富や信念を表現したものだという。
そのおかげで、町全体がまるで屋外美術館のように感じられる。
町の雰囲気はアッペンツェルを思わせる。規模は小さく、通りは整っていて、
人々の歩く速度もどこかゆったりしている。
インターラーケンやルツェルンのように観光客で溢れていないため、
湖畔を静かに散策するのにこれ以上ない場所だ。
水面に揺れる波と何百年も前の建物が並ぶ風景を眺めていると、
この町が戦争や急激な工業化の影響をほとんど受けず、
中世の姿を保ってきた理由が自然と理解できる。
ベンチに腰掛けて川を眺めていると、かつてこの川を行き交った無数の船の姿が目に浮かぶ。
今は静かな小さな町だが、長い年月の中で積み重ねられてきた人々の暮らしや物語が、
現在のシュタイン・アム・ラインを形作っているように感じられた。
派手さよりも落ち着いた美しさ、忙しい観光よりもゆっくりとした散策が似合う場所。
スイスの中ではやや知名度が低いかもしれないが、だからこそ心に深く残る町——
それがシュタイン・アム・ラインだった。
