파주시가 시민들의 교통 편의를 높이기 위해 지역 특성을 반영한 맞춤형 신호체계 개선에 나섰다.
시는 26일부터 버스정류장 인근 교차로와 소규모 도로를 중심으로 개선된 신호체계를 적용한다고 밝혔다.
이번 개선의 핵심은 획일적인 신호 운영에서 벗어나 장소와 시간대별 교통 특성을 고려한 맞춤형 신호 운영이다.

먼저 버스정류장 앞 교차로에서는 보행자의 신호 대기시간을 대폭 단축했다.
운정신도시 책향기로 일대를 중심으로 가람마을 2·8단지와 두레공원 앞 버스정류장 인근 횡단보도에 우선 적용되며, 향후 운영 결과를 토대로 점차 확대할 예정이다.
또한 왕복 2차로 이하 운정지역 소규모 도로 6개소에는 심야시간대(오후 10시~오전 6시) 점멸신호 운영을 확대 도입했다.
교통량이 적은 시간대 불필요한 신호 대기를 없애 차량 흐름의 효율성을 높이기 위한 조치다.
시는 이번 신호체계 개선으로 버스 이용 보행자의 대기시간이 줄어들고 소규모 도로의 차량 흐름도 개선돼 시민들이 일상에서 체감할 수 있는 교통 환경 개선 효과가 나타날 것으로 기대하고 있다.
양성원 첨단도시정보과장은 "교통량과 이용 행태가 다른 구간의 신호체계를 동일하게 운영하기보다는 장소와 시간대 특성에 맞춘 신호 조정이 필요하다"며 "앞으로도 시민 불편을 최소화하고 일상에서 체감할 수 있는 방향으로 신호체계를 지속적으로 개선해 나가겠다"고 말했다.
