도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 3일(현지시간) "미국은 베네수엘라·니콜라스 마두로 대통령에 대한 대규모 공격을 성공적으로 수행했다"고 밝혔다.
미 'AP 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 오전 자신의 트루스소셜에 올린 글을 통해 이같이 전한 후 "마두로 대통령은 아내와 함께 체포돼 그 나라(베네수엘라) 밖으로 날아갔다"고 전했다.
그러면서 "이 작전은 (미군과) 미국 법 집행 기관과 협력하에 수행됐으며 상세 사항은 뒤이어 밝힐 것"이라며 "오전 11시(미 동부시간·한국시간 4일 오전 1시) 마러라고(미 플로리다주 트럼프 대통령 자택)에서 기자 회견이 열린다"고 전했다.
미 'NYT(뉴욕타임스)'는 이날 "(트럼프 대통령은 이번 작전에 대해) 많은 좋은 계획·많은 훌륭한 부대·위대한 사람들이 역할을 했고, 정말 훌륭한 작전이었다고 말했다"고 전했다. 이번 마두로 대통령 생포 작전엔 미 육군 최정예 특수부대 '델타포스'가 동원된 것으로 알려졌다.
한편 이날 크리스토퍼 랜도 미 국무부 부장관은 자신의 엑스(X·옛 트위터)에 트럼프 대통령 트루스소셜 글을 공유 후 "베네수엘라에 새 아침이 밝았고, 독재자는 사라졌다"며 "그(마두로)는 지금 결국 그의 범죄 관련해 처벌받을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
